It’s not just you. Gas prices in Vancouver really are higher than normal. “Vancouver has the highest gas prices in the country,” according to a report from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, a non-profit that wants to lower taxes. At the time, they estimated that Vancouver drivers were paying on average $1.52 per litre at the pump in April 2021.

Vancouver’s residential real estate market has been heated, and the luxury market is no exception. According to a new report by Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, in 2021 the city saw 410 properties sold for over $4 million, representing a 171% year-over-year increase. Vancouver also saw Canada’s highest annual percentage gains in single-family home sales over $10 million at 240% year-over-year — or 24 properties.
Several businesses in downtown Vancouver were temporarily closed Friday because of a power outage caused by high winds. More than 20,000 customers around the Lower Mainland were without power Friday after a freezing rain storm swept across the region, according to BC Hydro. Nearly 2,500 customers in the West End went dark after the wind downed a power line.

As Vancouver sits under a thick blanket of snow, the city says it’s working 24/7 on its snow and ice removal efforts. “City crews are continuing to closely monitor the weather and implement a coordinated plan to treat for snow and ice on all key routes across Vancouver,” said the city in a January 1 update.
