Driverless Vehicle Demonstration Surrey 2019

What: An autonomous shuttle vehicle will be making loops in and around Surrey Civic Plaza over the span of more than two weeks in February 2019 to provide Metro Vancouver residents with an opportunity to experience the future of driving. This free public demonstration is a part of the joint partnership between the City of Surrey and the City of Vancouver for their Infrastructure Canada Smart Cities Challenge bid of creating Canada’s first two collision-free multimodal corridors with driverless vehicles.

The 2019 Unicorn Ball

What: The annual event, held by the Vancouver Pride Society, is returning to Vancouver for its third straight year. The winter fundraiser helps raise money for LGBTQ2+ communities. Taking place on Saturday, February 2 at the Imperial, the ball is celebrated with a dance party that runs from 9 pm to 2 am. Live music will take place throughout the entire night featuring DJ A$H, O Show, Angle, Krista, and Dezi Desire, to name a few. This year, all proceeds will go towards a VPS bursary fund to assist small, marginalized groups to participate in Pride or to create their own events come Pride season.

Sneaker Con Vancouver

What: Sneaker Con, affectionately dubbed as “the greatest sneaker show on earth,” will be coming to Vancouver for the first time ever this February. The event is a widescale collection and collaboration for fanatics to browse, talk and learn more about their favourite brands and shoes. Mission: Possible — Surrey Escape Room 2019

What: The City of Surrey and City of Vancouver’s Smart Cities partnership will be hosting a free escape room experience in Surrey Civic Plaza, just outside Surrey City Hall. Over the span of a 60-minute session on Saturday, February 9 and Sunday, February 10, participants will have to strategize, solve riddles, and collaborate through a series of puzzles and riddles to help create a smarter city. This experience is suitable for all ages given its varying difficulties, but parents must accompany elementary-aged children on challenges.

Women’s Personal Safety Workshops 2019

What: Women looking to learn more about self-defence are invited to join the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) for women’s personal safety workshops this winter. Participants will be able to learn easy self-defence tactics, and no prior training is required. The safety team encourages skills that involve “effective” self-defence.

The workshop is hosted by the VPD’s Women’s Personal Safety team. The VPD says the workshop is open to all women, but the minimum age to sign-up is 16-years old. Anyone under 18 must come with a parent to sign a waiver. More information is available online.

Free Roberts Bank Tour: The Container Trail 2019

What: Visitors will be taken on a driving tour through the container depots and logistics warehouses in Delta’s Tilbury Industrial Park, Port Authority’s Deltaport Truck Staging Area, Tsawwassen Container Examination Facility, and Delta iPort Logistics Centre. The tour will then end with a visit of Roberts Bank, where Canada’s busiest coal export facility and Canada’s largest container terminal are located. This includes an opportunity to get off the tour bus for an up-close look at container ships being loaded and unloaded at GCT Deltaport container terminal, which alone is 210 acres in size. Each tour takes about two hours and does not require any walking.

Vancouver Aquarium After Hours Valentine’s Day Edition

What: The evening affair is adults-only, and will set the stage for a provocative, sometimes racy, and often times comical exploration of the sex lives of aquatic animals. Singles and couples alike are invited to spend Valentine’s Day with a drink in hand while they explore the galleries after dark.

Vancouver Aquarium veterinary fellow Dr. Megan Strobel is hosting a talk on the sex lives of marine animals, where you can discover which aquatic animal has the biggest penis to body size ratio, which creatures engage in courting and which species mate for 14 hours straight. You can watch the “naughty puppet show,” back by popular demand, or take part in the Meet a Penguin program that will bring you toe to webbed toe with these loveable birds. La Poutine Week 2019

What: La Poutine Week kicks off all across Canada for the seventh time, and we can taste the squeaky cheese curd-goodness already. In the past, the annual week-long celebration of fries, curds, and gravy has seen hundreds of participating restaurants dish out original takes on the iconic Quebecois dish. The fest takes place during the first week of February for the dining public to eat and vote on their favourites before a winner is announced at the end of the week.

Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival

What: This annual celebration of all things hot chocolate is kicking off on January 19 and runs until February 14 – which means you have tons of days to try all of the participating ‘chocstars’ at this year’s fest. Each cafe, dessert bar, and restaurant has created sugary wondrous concoctions that take classic hot chocolates to a whole new level – there will be 70 drinks in total to explore.

Ocean Wise Seafood Chowder Chowdown  – Vancouver

What: Now in its eleventh year, Vancouver’s culinary heavyweights will go ladle-to-ladle in the soup-centric cook-off as attendees and a panel of judges sample the goods before casting their votes to name the 2019 champion. Ticket prices include the chance to taste all 15 chowders plus refreshments from local beverage partners, which will be announced closer to the event date. All proceeds directly support the Ocean Wise sustainable seafood program.

Vancouver International Wine Festival 2019

What: Canada’s premier food and wine festival, the Vancouver International Wine Festival, features 160 wineries from 15 countries. Known as “one of the biggest and oldest wine events in the world,” the festival will feature a plethora of California Wines this year, the showcase region for 2019.

Attendees can expect to see over 1,500 wines poured at the 54 events over the festival’s nine-day run. As always, HQ for the wine fest will be the Vancouver Convention Centre, but more than 20 other restaurants and venues around the city will host winery dinners, lunches, and seminars.
