What: Art + Running + Party? MEC and VMF team up for a creatively-inspiring, sweat-inducing Friday night. The curated runs feature 2 km and 5 km routes highlighting some of Mount Pleasant’s best public art, followed by an After Party with food and drinks at the VMF Gallery.

6th Annual Butterfly Release at Krause Berry Farms & Estate Winery

What: The 6th Annual Butterfly Release & Fundraiser is happening at the Krause Berry Farms and Estate Winery in Langley. The annual fundraiser brings in hundreds of guests every year who join the celebration at the beautiful gardens onsite. On the day of the event, Painted Lady Butterflies will take flight for the very first time, in an eclectic display of colour. There will also be live entertainment, crafts and activities, face painting, a wine tasting room, waffle bar, café and marketplace, and more.

Honda Celebration of Light fireworks 2019

What: The sky over Vancouver’s English Bay will once again be lit up with fireworks for three nights this summer, as the Honda Celebration of Light fireworks competition returns to the city. Now in its 29th year, the Honda Celebration of Light featured India on July 27 and Canada on July 31. Croatia will perform on August 3.

Back again for all three days, the Park Stage at Second Beach is a free, family-friendly festival site featuring live music, food trucks, sponsor activations, and a site-wide liquor license. The event also welcomes back the Red Bull Air Show, a spectacular pre-show performance happening over all three festival nights. Returning this year, radio partner Z95.3 will be presenting Z-Fest on The Keg Lounge stage overlooking English Bay for three nights of music programming before the pyrotechnic displays.

What: The city’s largest annual free public art celebration. Vancouver Mural Festival includes walking tours, evening events, and a massive street party. More than 140,000 people are expected to attend this year.

Friday Night Live 2019

Friday Night Live/Hastings Racecourse and Casino

What: Hastings Racecourse will be hosting its exhilarating Friday Night Live series from now to September 6, starting at 7 pm every Friday. This year, every Friday Night Live event will feature a cool playlist with their resident DJs spinning your favourite tracks all night long with a great mix of Hip Hop, R&B, Old School, Reggaeton, Top 40, EDM Music, and more.

As well as the amazing music and electric atmosphere, you can catch races happening under the stars. There’s also going to be outdoor beer tents with a great selection of highballs, your favourite beers on tap, as well as food trucks on site. Summer Sounds on Jack Poole Plaza

What: Starting on Friday, August 2, the convention centre is launching Summer Sounds on Jack Poole Plaza, a music experience which takes place across four weeks in August. Each event will run on Friday from 3 pm until 6 pm, and feature a local musician taking the stage to perform amidst a stunning Coal Harbour backdrop. The all-ages event will also feature light refreshments available for purchase as well as a featured beer garden for attendees 19 years of age or older.

VMF 2019 Gallery

What: Vancouver Mural Festival celebrates its fourth year with an art exhibition featuring 90+ original works from VMF alumni and other powerful talents from the Lower Mainland. Each original piece of art will be 12″ x 12″ and available for purchase.

A.W.E.V.A.N.A.I.R above the Vancouver Art Gallery

What: A 65-foot hot air balloon is scheduled to take flight above the Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) for the 2019 Honda Celebration of Light. The massive balloon, belonging to Hendrick’s Gin, is called the A.W.E.V.A.N.A.I.R, which stands for Amazing, Whimsical, Enchanting, Voyaging, Astounding, Nocturnal, Ascending, Interstellar, Roamer.

Lucky passengers will have a chance to ride the hot air balloon in groups of four, although they’ll have to win a “golden ticket” in order to ride. In order to win a golden ticket, contestants must have their name pulled in a ballot. Draws will be held at a number of participating bars around Vancouver, as well as onsite at the Hendrick’s Gin Air Departure Lounge from August 2 to 3. Eager riders can also enter via an online ballot.

Entrants must be residents of British Columbia and of legal drinking age to win and ride. No purchase is necessary.

Tsawwassen Sun Festival

What: The Tsawwasen Sun Festival is a three-day celebration of fun in the sun, with special events, games, friendly competitions and many other attractions. There’s antique hunting and skateboarding at the South Delta Recreation Centre and BINGO at KinVillage, while the bulk of the events take place at Winskill Park. As always, the pride of the Sun Festival is the annual Rotary Parade which heads down 56th Street from 16th Avenue to Winskill Park. Sponsored by dozens of companies and featuring hundreds of local individuals, clubs and businesses, the Rotary Parade brings together the Tsawwassen Sun Festival.

Nach`i`m: A Night of Indigenous Femme Excellence

What: Vancouver Mural Festival and Paisley Eva Nahanee (Dame) spotlight Vancouver’s contemporary Indigenous female* artists across all sectors from visual arts to music to tattooing. This event uses an inclusive definition of femme* and includes all self-identifying female, trans, and non-binary folks.

16th Annual Vancouver Dyke March and Festival

What: Vancouver’s 16th Annual Dyke March and Festival begins in McSpadden Park at 11 am with pre-March festivities and a community art project to create the new Vancouver Dyke March banner for the year. The March will leave McSpadden Park at noon and make its way down Commercial Drive to end at Grandview Park for the Festival. The Festival will take place from 1 to 5 pm, and involve performances from various artists, feature queer-friendly vendors, and create a space to gather with friends, family, and the community.

Art2Heart Summer Art Gala

Waste to Wonder Exhibit 2019

What: The Waste to Wonder exhibit consists of five life-size sculptures of Canadian at-risk wildlife — the narwhal, orca, bison, grizzly, and caribou — each of them made from upcycled flip flops. More than 6,500 flip flops in total were used to make the sculptures, requiring more than 2,500 hours of work by more than two dozen artists. In addition to the exhibit, there will be a selfie station with an iconic Canadian beaver sculpture, artist demo / meet & greet, upcycle bracelet workshops, upcycle Kiehl’s workshop, plastics recycling drives, contest giveaways, and more.

During the exhibit, each sculpture will be available for purchase through an online auction, starting at a minimum bid of $5,000. All proceeds will be donated to Variety – the Children’s Charity.

Paint in the Park with Opus

What: A fun-for-all-ages outdoor painting challenge hosted by Vancouver Mural Festival and Opus. VMF will provide canvas panels from Opus, so all you have to do is bring your own art supplies. Acrylics or oils, watercolour or pencil, collage or assemblage — all are welcome. All participants who exhibit their finished piece at this event will be entered to win a prize.

What: The biggest, wettest water fight to ever hit Vancouver is making its highly-anticipated return to Stanley Park on Saturday, August 10, 2019. The annual event is returning for its twelfth consecutive year. Vancouver Mural Festival Mount Pleasant Street Party 

What: For one day, free and family-friendly activities will line 14 blocks of the neighbourhood spanning the length of Main and Broadway. Enjoy live music, live and interactive art, Skate Jam, dance battles and workshops, the Holden Courage Memorial Graffiti Jam, a family art zone, community painting, markets, food trucks, four (family-friendly) beer gardens, over 25 breweries, and a public disco dance party.

Playing music all afternoon long are two concert stages presented by AIR MILES Stage Pass. DJ NDN will be headlining, along with local artists like Blonde Diamond, Haley Blais, Missy D & Friends, Tonye Aganaba, DJ Paisley Eva, Quarterback, Francis Arevalo, Sleepy Gonzalez, and Sam the Astronaut.
