White Rock's food scene just got a serious upgrade ā here's what's new
Ever since The Boathouse Restaurant closed its White Rock location (alongside its Kitsilano outpost and later its spot in Port Moody), things have been looking pretty quiet on the food front for the area of Metro Vancouver. That is, until recently.
First, Big Way Hot Pot officially opened the doors to its White Rock location at 1436 Johnston Rd. on Saturday, Aug. 29.

The chain of self-serve hot pot restaurants has taken the area by storm, expanding all across Metro Vancouver and beyond with no signs of stopping. Big Way has grown so popular that it quite often has multiple locations on the same block (like its two outposts in Burnaby) or just a couple of blocks away (like inĀ Richmond).
Big Way gained its rise to fame through its pay-by-weight model. Guests are given a bowl and tongs when they enter and then are prompted to add whatever ingredients they want to their bowl from a wall of fridges, including plenty of meats, veggies, noodles, and more.
Once guests are happy with their bowl, it is then weighed, and guests are charged by the weight. The ingredients are then cooked in the guest’s broth of choice and are brought to their table.
There are also sauce stations for folks to customize their own dipping sauce, and the restaurant provides complimentary ice cream once you finish your soup.
In addition to Big Way, Goldie’s Donuts and Bakery has opened a location at 15090 North Bluff Rd.
Goldie’s opened its first Metro Vancouver location two years ago in West Vancouver. Here, the doughnut shop was serving up fluffy brioche donuts fermented for 24 hours with delicious cream fillings and glazes, all made in-house. Since then, it has popped up in Vancouver, North Vancouver, Langley, Port Coquitlam, and now White Rock.
The team behind Bean and Berry, known best for serving chocolate-covered strawberry cups along the pier, recently opened the doors to their first brick-and-mortar space under the same name at 1122 Vidal St. In addition to the aforementioned chocolate strawberries, the cafe is also serving up a selection of coffee and matcha offerings.

Earlier this year, Spicy Pier also opened its doors at 14945 Marine Dr., offering what it calls “bold Indian fusion flavours,” in addition to the launch of White Rock Burger Co. by the team behind brunch-favourite Wooden Spoon as a new, takeout-only smash burger option for the city.
As for The Boathouse location, there’s still no update on who will be taking over the space.
