The restaurant industry in Vancouver can be fickle and – once again – the city’s dining scene has suffered some casualties. Alas, this is the way of the foodie world.

Here is your update on restaurants in and around Vancouver that have recently shuttered or will do so imminently.

Legendary Richmond eatery Hoi Tong Chinese Seafood Restaurant is closing its doors at the end of the month. The 8191 Westminster Highway restaurant has long been a favourite for locals and visitors alike thanks to Chef Leung Yiu Tong, arguably one of the best authentic Cantonese chefs in the city.

The eatery at 1184 Denman Street, located near the corner of Denman and Davie, known for its Vietnamese subs and pho, announced its closure late last month.

Vancouver eatery Sushi Itoga has closed after 10 years of operation. The 1668 Robson Street restaurant was known for its fresh food and affordable prices. The much-loved sushi spot officially closed its doors on February 23, 2019. The establishment thanked its customers for their patronage and cited an expired lease as the reason for closing.

Vancouver’s popular English Bay eatery The Beach Bay Cafe has closed its doors. The 1193 Denman Street eatery, operated by the Viaggio Hospitality Group, was known for its coastal-style cuisines and killer location (and patio) and shut its doors to make way for a new concept from the group.

The 1055 Mainland Street bar known for its brews, pub fare, and TVs perfect for watching televised sporting events has only temporarily closed. Phat’s website says the business will be re-opening in spring 2019 with a new look, a new name, but will operate under the same ownership.

The small 12,000-sq-ft lot is right next to the Capital Residences tower and is currently occupied by a 1914-built single-storey retail building with tenants such as a picture frame store, Red Burrito, Simon’s Bike Shop, Vancity Weed, Thai Cuisine Restaurant, and India Gate. In a recent Instagram post, the restaurant said it received an eviction notice to vacate the property.
