Inside the B.C. donut shop celebrities and Metro Vancouver can’t get enough of

Kate Winslet is known for many things, but perhaps what we know her best for (aside from movies like Titanic and The Holiday) is her love of Deep Cove’s Honey’s Doughnuts and Goodies (also known as Honey’s). She’s even gone on the record to say she “pines” for them.
Winslet isn’t the only star-studded visitor to rave about the North Vancouver donut shop. John Cena, Harry Styles, Shay Mitchell, and many more are flocking from all over to try these donuts. So, we needed to know: what, exactly, is the hype all about?

Now we’ve had our fair share of donuts and have liked every single one. From Lee’s iconic jelly-filled ones (coincidentally, Seth Rogan’s favourite) to Port Moody’s Sweet Talk (which, if you didn’t know, moonlights as a cocktail lounge in the evening), we think we know what we’re talking about when it comes to the sugary delicacy.
So while we were waiting in line, which seems to be a constant for Honey’s, we were starting to wonder if these donuts were indeed as good as everyone made them out to be.
We were in the Deep Cove area specifically to try Dip Co. Sandwich, allegedly another one of Kate Winslet’s favourites, and conveniently located just a few doors down from Honey’s. But we also had an invite to a party that same evening and couldn’t bear the idea of showing up empty-handed.
“You’re going to be everyone’s favourite if you bring Honey’s,” said a colleague who joined for the sandwich excursion.
Coming in at $3.75 per donut (or $4.50 for its specialty flavour), it definitely wasn’t the most money we’d ever spent on a donut. After asking the staff which one they thought was best, they pointed us towards the one that started it all: the Honey’s donut. Our colleague opted for the maple one instead, which we would definitely be asking for a bite from later.
And so there we were, sitting out in front of Honey’s with two bags in hand, ready to see if this donut would change our lives. Unfortunately (for our wallet), it did.

Donut lovers will know there are two varieties in the world: yeast-raised, which are light and fluffy, or cake-based, which tend to be denser and have a slightly crumbly texture. We thought we were firmly in the yeast-raised camp, but Honey’s might have changed our mind.
One bite in this cake-based honey-saturated delight and we were hooked. We may receive some flak for this, but our immediate thought was that this reminded us of a less wet gulab jamun, the Indian dessert that we also happen to love. Plus, the donut was still warm, like it had just come out of the fryer.
We also stole a bite from the maple one, our videographers’ favourite. While it was obviously good, we don’t think it topped the original that we had just tried.

After our transformative donut journey, we knew what we needed to do. We got back in line, bought a half dozen donuts, and went to our after-work party. And before you ask, yes: everyone loved them (and hopefully us as well, as a result).
This is all to say that, while Winslet may be best known for her star-studded Hollywood career, she could have a career as a donut critic, too.
