Vancouver vegan restaurant to remain open after closure announcement — here's what we know

The restaurant industry can be fickle, with restaurants closing and opening all over the city. However, it is rare for a Vancouver restaurant to reopen after announcing a closure, which is the case for Chi.
In mid-August, Chi announced that it would be closing its doors after nine years.
“Chi began as a small dream in Kitsilano, a place to share the food of my childhood and the flavours of my heritage. Over time, that dream evolved, just as I did,” said owner and chef Chi Le on Instagram.
In 2016, Le opened Chi at 1935 W. 4th Ave. Initially, the restaurant served a menu featuring modern Vietnamese eats before transitioning into a fully plant-based concept after the pandemic. Folks may also recognize Le from her time on MasterChef Vietnam, where she was the runner-up.
The restaurant’s final day of operation was Aug. 14, but Chi did release a cookbook, which is currently available online, for those who wanted to continue enjoying its recipes.
However, new owners have since taken over the space and reopened the restaurant under the same name.
“We are delighted to announce that Chi has reopened, embracing the heart and vision that have always defined its unique spirit,” owner Michael Frey told Dished. “Our mission is to create a welcoming and dependable destination where guests return for consistently exceptional service and a genuine sense of community.”

Frey also assured us that while they did make some changes to the menu, select fan-favourite items will remain alongside its new offerings.
“We have expanded the menu and offerings and lowered the prices! We have really yummy and creative Banh Mi sandwiches. Our lunch special is $15 for a traditional bun mi and a side of lotus root chips or lemongrass soup,” said Frey.

Additionally, Frey confirmed that Chi would remain entirely plant-based as well.
“Our team is deeply grateful to Chi’s family for their remarkable dedication and hard work in establishing the foundation of this restaurant. While honouring their roots and spirit, we look forward to building upon that legacy and infusing new energy as we embark on this exciting next chapter,” added Frey.
Chi is currently open and operates daily from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
