Vancouver vegan restaurant announces closure after nearly a decade and people are upset

It’s been a rough year for the Vancouver restaurant industry, with many longstanding restaurants announcing closures. Unfortunately, another one has shared that it will be shuttering.

After nine years of service, Chi announced it will be closing its doors.

ā€œChi began as a small dream in Kitsilano, a place to share the food of my childhood and the flavours of my heritage. Over time, that dream evolved, just as I did,ā€ said owner and chef Chi Le on Instagram.

In 2016, Le opened Chi at 1935 W 4th Ave. Initially, the restaurant served a menu featuring modern Vietnamese eats before transitioning into a fully plant-based concept after the pandemic. Folks may also recognize Le from her time on MasterChef Vietnam, where she was the runner-up.

ā€œChi has never just been a restaurant,ā€ added Le. ā€œIt has been a home, and you have been its heart.ā€

Chi closes its doors on August 14, but those looking to enjoy some of their favourite plant-based meals from the restaurant after that are still in luck. The restaurant recently released a cookbook with 75 recipes, which is available in person at Chi before it closes, and also online.

Many people commented on the Instagram post, sharing how much they would miss the restaurant.

ā€œOh, you will be missed! The vegan options in Vancouver are limited, but places like yours are such a gem. We appreciate what you’ve done for the community. Best of luck on your next chapter,ā€ shared one user.

ā€œGoing to miss you!!!!! The restaurant has been a staple since I arrived in Vancouver, and so sad to see you go,ā€ added another.

ā€œThank you so much for the wonderful memories and delicious food. Seeing you cross over to a fully plant-based menu was truly inspiring. You and your team will be missed,ā€ said a third.
