Vancouver bagel makers share heartfelt goodbye message

The Vancouver restaurant industry has had a rough year so far, and we’ve unfortunately had another casualty.
Bagel Day shared on Instagram that it would be ceasing its operations this month.
“This is a decision we made back in November 2024 when we were in Hong Kong,” shared the bagel shop. “Contrary to what people may think… this decision was made on a whim and didn’t require much thinking/convincing on both sides, which seems like we’ve come full circle cause Bagel Day started on a whim as well.”

For those unfamiliar, Bagel Day offered an assortment of Asian-inspired and Jellycat-themed bagels and was owned by friends Michelle and Maureen. It was also well-known in the farmers market circuit and hosted numerous pop-ups throughout Metro Vancouver.
“As much as we enjoyed the experience of running our own business, we both agree it’s physically and mentally tiring. Thinking of what to post on social media, brainstorming bagel flavours, planning events, replenishing ingredients, hauling 20 kg of flour from our cars to our upstairs station, working 18 hr shifts on market prep days, waking up at 4 a.m. to bake, the list goes on,” said Bagel Day.
“There’s truly not a moment in the past year where were not thinking about Bagel Day. But, we want to take a step back and explore other professional opportunities.”
Additionally, Bagel Day cited the increased cost of ingredients alongside “a million different things.”
“We learned a lot running our own biz and met a lot of wonderful people who supported us along the way. No words can really describe how much appreciation and love we have for the community we’ve built,” added Bagel Day.
“We always love hearing how people found out about us and it’s wild when people tell us they’re from Toronto/New York/HK and made sure they tried our bagels before heading home. Maureen and I still find that hard to believe people have Bagel Day on their itinerary (cus like????). We’ve met so many of you guys and trust us when I say we remember every one of you guys.”
