Friday Night Live 2019

What: Hastings Racecourse will be hosting its exhilarating Friday Night Live series until September 6, starting at 7 pm every Friday. This year, every Friday Night Live event will feature a cool playlist with their resident DJs spinning your favourite tracks all night long with a great mix of Hip Hop, R&B, Old School, Reggaeton, Top 40, EDM Music, and more.

As well as the amazing music and electric atmosphere, you can catch races happening under the stars. There’s also going to be outdoor beer tents with a great selection of highballs, your favourite beers on tap, as well as food trucks on site. Don’t forget the legendary Silks Buffet which offers the most incredible views of the racecourse and the mountains in the backdrop.

Rape is Real & Everywhere: Comedy by Survivors at the Vancouver Fringe Festival

What: Rape is Real answers the questions, “Can rape jokes be funny? What if the people telling them were survivors?” Featuring stand-up comedians sharing raw, honest stories in a hilarious manner throughout the Vancouver Fringe Festival.

Hidden Wonders

What: Hidden Wonders is the next edition of Shawn Farquhar’s Cabaret of Wonders, and premieres in a secret location in Chinatown. Shawn is a World Champion of Magic, has performed on Ellen, fooled Las Vegas headliners Penn & Teller twice on Fool Us, and had his magic featured on shows like Fringe, Shut Eye, and X-Files.

Waste to Wonder Exhibit 2019

Bear (Waste to Wonder)

What: The Waste to Wonder exhibit consists of five life-size sculptures of Canadian at-risk wildlife — the narwhal, orca, bison, grizzly, and caribou — each of them made from upcycled flip flops. More than 6,500 flip flops in total were used to make the sculptures, requiring more than 2,500 hours of work by more than two dozen artists. In addition to the exhibit, there will be a selfie station with an iconic Canadian beaver sculpture, artist demo / meet & greet, upcycle bracelet workshops, upcycle Kiehl’s workshop, plastics recycling drives, contest giveaways, and more.

During the exhibit, each sculpture will be available for purchase through an online auction, starting at a minimum bid of $5,000. All proceeds will be donated to Variety – the Children’s Charity.

Canada Men’s National Rugby Team vs USA

What: On Saturday, September 7, Canada’s Men’s Rugby Team is set to host their historic rivals, USA Rugby, at BC Place in what’s expected to be an unforgettable match. This is the last chance to catch the team before they compete in the Rugby World Cup, so you know they’ll be playing at the top of their game. Hot on the heels of the HSBC Canada Sevens in March, BC Place is an epic spot for high-energy rugby matches. Expect the crowd to be loud and the atmosphere to be electric.

Bike the Night 2019

HUB Cycling

What: Bike the Night, British Columbia’s largest on-street nighttime bike ride, with Vancouver’s most iconic roads opened exclusively for an after-hours bike ride, hosted by HUB Cycling and presented by MEC.

Participants are invited to deck our their bike in bright lights, dress up in their flashiest apparel, and join thousands of riders of all ages in a 10 km joy ride. The family-friendly event kicks off at 6 pm at Sunset Beach with a pre-ride festival, complete with music, food trucks, free bike-tune-ups, games, and tons of giveaways and prizes. The ride then takes cyclists though a colourful, vibrant ride through car-free Vancouver streets, including the Burrard Street Bridge.

BC Derby & Derby Oaks 2019

Hastings Racecourse

What: On September 7, the Hastings Racecourse is hosting the 74th annual BC Derby and 56th annual BC Oaks. BC Horse Racing Hall of Fame owner Peter Redekop has increased the winner’s purse to $250,000, making it the richest stakes race on the Hastings 2019 calendar. Together with the $100,000 BC Oaks, $50,000 SW Randall Plate, and $50,000 Delta Colleen, there’s a total purse amount of $450,000 up for grabs.

Attendees can wager as little as $2 on any race, making it easy for newbies to have fun and learn about horse racing. Admission to the event is completely free. There will also be food trucks, live music, and outdoor beer tents during the day.

25th Annual Metro Vancouver Feast of Fields

What: FarmFolk CityFolk is hosting its annual food celebration, Feast of Fields. This large-scale event is the longest-running local food and beverage festival in Canada — since 1995, almost 60 of these events have been hosted across the province of British Columbia. The festival highlights the importance of farm-to-table relationships between people and their food, and celebrates the connections between farmers and chefs, field and table, and farm and city folks.

Dress up in your fancy attire—don’t forget to take a glass of wine and a napkin—and get ready to wander around for four hours to enjoy some gourmet, farm-fresh bites. Guests are invited to travel from tent to tent to taste gourmet creations from some of the Lower Mainland’s best chefs, bakers, and brewers.

FAÇADE Festival

What: The Vancouver Art Gallery is going to look very different when you walk past it every evening from September 8 to 14. The gallery’s exterior facade will be covered with a projection of dynamic artwork. Burrard Arts Foundation is partnering up with the Vancouver Art Gallery for the Facade Festival, an outdoor public art and cultural event featuring commissioned works by contemporary artists.

The artists will be paired up each evening with an encore of all of their works on Friday and Saturday. In addition, there will be an artist panel, and a special projection mapping experience by Go2 Productions on Saturday.

Human Library at VPL

What: Taking place on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, and presented by Zee Zee Theatre, the Human Library, will allow attendees to “check out” a human being to facilitate their learning. The 20-minute, candid conversations are meant to open people’s eyes “to the diversity of lived experience.”

Human books are available on a first-come, first-served basis during event hours. The event is free to attend, and “human books” are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
