Spring Break Family FUSE Week

Vancouver Art Gallery/Rachel Topham

What: For the first time, the Gallery is expanding Family FUSE to five fun-filled days from Monday, March 25 to Friday, March 29. Your family can visit the Gallery together from 12 to 4 pm daily to enjoy this year’s programming, The Everyday in Different Ways.  This includes engaging in-gallery activities with their team of experienced Art Agents (12 to 4 pm), who bring the exhibitions to life with activities and conversations about the artworks on display.

Kids can also get creative and let their imaginations soar in The Making Place (12 to 4 pm), where they’ll explore the artist’s decision-making process in these unique learning sessions with fun, hands-on activities. Talented local artists Lee Hutzulak, Caroline Liffmann and Carolina Bergonzoni, Derya Akay and Vivienne Bessette, Ewan McNeil, and Maya Beaudry will be hosting different workshops from Monday to Friday that you can join.

Vancouver International Dance Festival: Life Drawing Sessions

What: Practice your drawing skills and let your creativity be inspired by dancers and life models posing in either costumes or plain clothes in the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall. These public sessions, presented in partnership with the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre, are open to all skill levels, are free, and require no pre-registration. Sketching paper, pencils, and other supplies are available for participants to borrow.

Vancouver South African Film Festival

What:  The Vancouver South African Film Festival returns to the city for its ninth annual extravaganza this weekend. Hosted at SFU Woodward’s Theatre, you can see films and documentaries that inspire, entertain and inform. All of the films are linked by a common theme: Exploring the rich history, culture and politics of South Africa.

This year’s titles include award-winning heavy-hitting dramas and documentaries. It’s also a charitable endeavour: The volunteer-organized event gives all proceeds to Education without Borders, a joint Canadian-South African initiative. The three-day event also features an opening night gala on Friday evening.

Where the performer’s previous show ABRACADABRA drew on classic forms of magic, Magik takes audiences into a new, more adventurous territory. Spring Break at the Carousel

What: Burnaby Village Museum is throwing open the gates for 12 days of Spring Break family fun. Stroll the streets of a 1920s village and visit businesses and homes. 10 Gates Dancing – Trust

What: Shen Yun Performing Arts features dance as the centrepiece, with classical and folk styles from China’s many ethnicities set to a live orchestra which combines Chinese and Western instruments. Richmond Outdoor Spring Carnival

What: West Coast Amusements, the largest Canadian midway operation in Western Canada, will be making a stop at the Lansdowne Centre in Richmond. They’ll be setting up for 10 straight days with a massive array of rides, games, and traditional carnival eats.

The outdoor carnival will be open from March 21 to March 31, 2019, with hours of operation varying by date and weather. Attendees can ride six attractions for $16.99 or purchase a daily wristband for $40. Tickets for rides may also be purchased individually and in groups of 20 and 40.

Blossom at Metropolis

Blossom at Metropolis/Daily Hive

What: Metropolis at Metrotown’s Grand Court will become the site of Blossom at Metropolis, a one-of-a-kind art installation that includes more than 250,000 cherry blossoms. Mall-goers are encouraged to pass by and get an early glimpse of some gorgeous white and pink petals, all created by interactive arts company Hfour.

In addition to more than a quarter-million cherry blossoms, the exhibit will feature dozens of mirror spheres (the largest being four metres in size) that’ll create the illusion of infinite blooms. A series of floral art and Japanese culture workshops will also be held every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, while the exhibit is in place. And of course, what installation would be complete without a selfie zone?
