Spring is just around the corner, and the city is filled with many great events to check out in March. From Urban Grind to HSBC Canada Sevens, here are 60 fun things to do in Vancouver this month.

Vancouver’s Biggest Dog Meet-Up

What: Vancouver’s biggest dog meet-up is returning to Trout Lake Park for another year, and more than 1,300 people have already expressed interest in attending. The event takes place on Sunday, March 1, and is hosted by Dogs of Vancity.

Any dog owners with a furry friend that loves to play well with others are invited to join in the festivities and meet hundreds of other canines. Those who don’t have pets are also more than welcome to pay a visit and meet some new friends.

Study and Go Abroad Fair

What: The Study and Go Abroad Fair is a free event for students looking for undergraduate or postgraduate options at home or abroad. The expo offers an opportunity to meet directly with universities from around the world, and to learn about scholarships, admission requirements and program options. Also featured is a Travel Zone with work abroad, volunteering, internships and language travel programs.

When: March 3, 2020

Urban Grind 2020 at Harbour Centre

What: Vancouver’s annual Urban Grind is returning to the city for 2020. The 633-step climb takes place at Vancouver’s Harbour Centre and takes climbers to the tower’s iconic Lookout observation deck at the top of the building, 28 storeys high.

There’s a $5 entry fee to participate as many times as you wish during the day, and upon reaching the top, participants receive a free beer and a $5 voucher for the Harbour Centre’s food court. On March 31, a timing chip will be available for people who want to race to the top. The climb will also have a by-donation coat check. All proceeds from the coat check will benefit The Kettle Society, a local mental health charity.

Free Tour: The Container Trail

What: Visitors will be taken on a driving tour through the container depots and logistics warehouses in Delta’s Tilbury Industrial Park, Port Authority’s Deltaport Truck Staging Area, Tsawwassen Container Examination Facility, and Deltaport Logistics Centre.

The tour will then end with a visit of Roberts Bank, where Canada’s busiest coal export facility and Canada’s largest container terminal are located. This includes an opportunity to get off the tour bus for an up-close look at container ships being loaded and unloaded at GCT Deltaport container terminal, which alone is 210 acres in size. Each tour takes about two hours and does not require any walking.

I Heart Tulips

What: The second annual I Heart Tulips event celebrates the arrival of spring by filling Metropolis at Metrotown’s Grand Court with 14,000 multicolour tulips arranged in multiple heart shapes. Made by the creators of the Chilliwack Tulip Festival, the installation will be viewable from all three levels of the mall from 10 am to 11 am. Following that, tulips will be available for picking at eight stems for $5 or 20 stems for $10.

Proceeds from the installation will go to Variety — the Children’s Charity, an organization that has been providing direct help to BC children with special needs for more than 50 years. I Heart Tulips will also include plenty of tulip photo-ops including life-sized photo frames, a replica mini flower stand, and an adorable tulip-filled baby carriage. Take-home Polaroids are available for an additional donation.

Eastside Flea

What: Eastside Flea is a modern-day flea market that takes place bi-weekly in Vancouver. Each event hosts over 50 local vendors selling diverse goods from handmade independent maker wares to vintage clothing, collectibles, plants, artisan eats, and more. You’ll also find food trucks, live DJs, and more.

When: March 7 and 8, March 21 and 22, April 4 and 5, April 18 and 19, 2020

RBC JCC Sports Dinner

What: The 27th Annual RBC JCC Sports Dinner celebrates professional and local athletes and raises funds to provide scholarships and programs for members of the community who wouldn’t otherwise have access to services. The evening includes live and silent auctions, dinner, and networking opportunities. This year’s keynote speaker is Super Bowl Champion and MVP Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints. The Jack Diamond Sports Personality of the Year Award is Noah Cantor.

Women & Queer Night at The Bike Kitchen

What: Learn how to tune up your bike in a positive space for trans women, cis women, and queer and genderqueer folks in a relaxed environment led by female- and/or LGBTQ2I-identified mechanics and volunteers. All bicycle and mechanical skill levels are welcome, and pizza will be provided.

Unicorn Ball 2020

What: The annual event, held by the Vancouver Pride Society, is returning to Vancouver for its fourth straight year. The winter fundraiser helps raise money for LGBTQ2+ communities. Taking place on March 14 at the Imperial, the ball is celebrated with a dance party that runs from 9 pm to 2 am. Live music will take place throughout the entire night, plus there will be a costume contest, photo booth, and more. This year, all proceeds will go towards a VPS bursary fund to assist small, marginalized groups to participate in Pride or to create their own events come Pride season.

Monster Jam

What: Vallea Lumina is a 45-minute adventure that follows two hikers seeking “a mystical valley where stardust falls from the sky.” The interactive experience gives hikers the chance to play, touch, and engage with Vallea Lumina’s ever-changing environment. It is presented by Montreal-based entertainment studio Moment Factory and Whistler’s “The Adventure Group.”

There will also be a free shuttle going to and from Cougar Mountain, as well as non-alcoholic refreshments and snacks available for purchase on-site.

Shuvinai Ashoona: Mapping Worlds

What: Shuvinai Ashoona: Mapping Worlds is a showcase of drawings by acclaimed Inuk artist Shuvinai Ashoona during the past two decades. Vancouver International Wine Festival 2020

What: Canada’s premier food and wine festival, the Vancouver International Wine Festival will take place until March 1, 2020, and it will feature 164 wineries from 15 countries. Known as “one of the biggest and oldest wine events in the world,” the festival will feature a plethora of French wineries (43 of them) this year, the showcase region for 2020. As always, HQ for the wine fest will be the Vancouver Convention Centre, but more than 25 other restaurants and venues around the city will host winery dinners, lunches, and seminars.

Bob Saget

What: America’s iconic comic, TV personality, and actor Bob Saget (Full House, America’s Funniest Home Videos) is performing a stand-up show at River Rock on March 13. Featuring special guest Todd Allen.

Sagat’s stand-up comedy career spans more than 30 years, and his 2014 stand-up special That’s What I’m Talkin’ About was nominated for a Grammy. Saget starred as Pastor Greg in the Tony-nominated play Hand To God, and his first book, Dirty Daddy, became a New York Times best-seller.

Shen Yun Performing Arts Vancouver 2020

What: Shen Yun Performing Arts has become one of the biggest productions on earth, taking attendees back to the magical world of Ancient China. The production features dance as the centrepiece, with classical and folk styles from China’s many ethnicities set to a live orchestra that combines Chinese and Western instruments. The performance is guided by hosts who narrate everything in both English and Chinese.

Stuff You Should Know Live

What: Award-winning podcast Stuff You Should Know is coming to Vancouver for a live show at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on Sunday, March 29. Since 2008, Bryant and Clark have released a mind-boggling selection of episodes every Tuesday and Thursday, produced by the website HowStuffWorks. Already, they have released over 800 episodes and garnered more than 15 billion downloads worldwide.

The Atlanta-based duo played themselves in a scripted TV show on the Science Channel, and they’re starting work on a Stuff You Should Know book with hopes to have it published before the end of the decade.

The Strokes

What: Iconic American Indie rock band The Strokes catapulted to fame in 2001 with the critically-acclaimed debut album, This Is It — ranked eighth on Rolling Stone’s “100 Best Debut Albums of All Time” and fourth on NME’s “Top 500 Albums of All Time.” The same members who formed the band in 1998 are still playing today: singer Julian Casablancas, guitarists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr, bassist Nikolai Fraiture, and drummer Fabrizio Moretti.

Their latest release The New Abnormal is The Strokes’ first full album since Comedown Machine in 2013.
