10 amazing things to do in Calgary this week: January 15 to 19

While it’s still expected to be cold this week, it’s not going to be nearly as freezing in Calgary as it has been which means you might feel like leaving your house! If you do venture outdoors (even to get somewhere else indoors) there are so many amazing things to do in the city this week!

From a new Broadway Across Canada show to some great seasonal activities, here’s what to watch for in Calgary this week.

Broadway Across Canada: Mean Girls

What: This week, we wear pink! Broadway Across Canada has made its way to Calgary with the classic musical from Tina Fey. Promising to be “ferociously funny” and “so fetch,” this is a great way to perk yourself up this week with a hilarious throwback.

Robbie Burns Night at the Rocky Mountain Folk Club

Rosedale Community Association

What: Celebrate like the Scots with this traditional Robbie Burns Night at the Rocky Mountain Folk Club. It’s a night brimming with traditional Scottish music and, of course, Haggis!

When: January 19 at 7:30 pm

Rent Ice Bikes at Bowness Park

What: If you’re looking for a fun new winter activity, why not give ice biking a try? These unique contraptions let you peddle while sitting and enjoying the view of the park from your bike!

When: Park hours are from 5 am to 11 pm. The rental shop is open Fridays from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 8 pm.

Try a hot pool or sauna around Calgary

What: With the chilly temperatures this week, nothing sounds quite as nice as a hot pool or sauna to melt into! There are so many great spots around the city, we rounded up some of the most popular ones worth checking out here.

What: Now that the cold has set in, there are so many places around Calgary where you can get your skate on. From probably the most popular spot in the city — Olympic Plaza — to Bowness Park, it’s a great way to get outside and have fun in the colder months.

What: If skating isn’t your thing, but you’re still brave enough to head outdoors this week, you can always try tubing at Winsport! With snow in the forecast, it could be the perfect week for it – if you bundle up, of course.

Banff Snow Days

What: The SnowDays Festival is back in Banff with stunning ice sculptures taking over Lake Louise and giant snow sculptures all over the town of Banff.

What: You won’t want to miss this furry winter attraction: the zoo’s two new polar bears! Baffin and Siku arrived in Calgary this fall, and their exhibit became open to the public on December 1. Calgarians have already fallen in love with the pair of previously orphaned bears.

What: Banff Gondola has transformed into a winter wonderland with the peak of Sulphur Mountain dressed in ambient lighting. The whole experience brings the stories of the Rockies to life. We checked it out for ourselves and couldn’t get enough of the immersive experience and the incredible food at Sky Bistro.

When: November 18, 2023, to March 30, 2024

Blood, Sweat, and Tears: Canadian Military Medicine

What: This exhibition showcases Canada’s military medical history from the 19th century to modern times. The exhibit features personal artifacts and oral histories of the men and women who have tended to the wounded in Canada’s military history.

Canadian stretcher-bearers, medics, nurses, doctors, surgeons, and other medical personnel have played an essential role in the country’s military, especially in the First and Second World Wars, where over 138,000 and 53,000 were wounded, respectively.

Blood, Sweat, and Tears will display pieces from all over Canada, including three Victoria Crosses on loan from the Canadian War Museum. The exhibit covers battlefield medicine from initial first aid through recovery and features a significant section on PTSD.
