New Vancouver cafe will transport you to the south of France

Vancouver is home to some stellar cafes, but those wanting a bit of an escape from the West Coast vibes are in for a treat with this new cafe.
Sud Cafe, opening at 1082 Cardero Street in the former space of Cardero Grocery, aims to transport guests to the south of France in both its ambience and its food.
Dished had the chance to speak with co-owner Luc Duval, who also owns the recently opened Petrichor Social (chef of Petrichor, Thibaut Nicaise, is a co-owner of Sud), about the new concept and what people can expect when it opens.

For starters, Duval let us know that coffee shops are different in the south of France from the ones here in Vancouver. He referred to them more as a bar and said they always include a “good atmosphere” and staff that are “friendly in a way that they talk to you like you’ve been going forever, even if it’s your first time.” This is something he’s aiming to bring with his new cafe.
“We’re trying to make a place that is warm and welcoming for everybody,” said Duval.
This warmth goes right down to the decor, which Duval said will incorporate warm colours like dark yellows and greens into the 16-seat cafe.
Regarding the coffee program, Duval told Dished that customers can expect traditional coffee offerings. You’ll be able to find your regular lattes and hot and cold drinks, but he also teased there will be some drinks that offer a bit of a French and Mediterranean twist.
But Sud Cafe’s food menu will lean much harder toward the French influence than its drink offerings.

“There is one specific thing we’ll be serving that is a pastry from a small city in the south of France that is kind of like a brioche, but more sweet and buttery, and also with an orange flavour to it,” said Duval.
“You’ll find more traditional items from a coffee shop, but we’ll definitely be offering items with a twist from the south of France, both in the pastries and drinks.”
Duval is hopeful for an April 2025 opening. Once open, Sud will operate seven days a week from 7 am to 5 pm, with brunch available on Fridays and Saturdays until 3 pm.
