The restaurant industry can be fickle, and unfortunately we’ve lost another fan-favourite Vancouver eatery after five years of operation: Potluck Hawker Eatery.

“We launched our hawker-inspired eatery in the summer of 2020, a time when the future of restaurants was uncertain,” shared the restaurant on Instagram.”Despite the additional hurdles of opening during a pandemic, Potluck became more than just a place for rice bowls and fried chicken sandwiches—it became a cornerstone for the community. It’s this very community that has sustained us, and we wholeheartedly thank you for making Potluck what it is today.”

The restaurant’s final day of service was Sunday, Oct. 19.

The 993 sq. ft. restaurant was headed by Justin Cheung, a longtime chef of Longtail Kitchen and co-owner with operational manager Dominic Sai.

Cheung grew up with his mother’s Malaysian cooking, as well as his uncle’s char kuay teow stall and says that he’ll be bringing comfort dishes from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

The spot was best known for its signature menu items like Mama Cheung’s Laksa (fish cake, prawn, tofu puff, aromatic coconut lemongrass broth, wheat noodles, bean sprouts, and boiled egg) and Crispy Pata (whole-braised and deep fried pork hock served with soy sawsawan and mang thomas all purpose for dipping).

However, this isn’t the end for the space as the Potluck team shared it will be transitioning it into it’s sister concept Street Hawker.

“This won’t be the end, just for now,” wrote Potluck. “Our sister restaurant’s newest addition, Street Hawker 2.0, will be coming soon this winter to the same space.”

Street Hawker currently operates a location at 3088 Main St. and is a fast-casual counter-service destination for Southeast Asian-inspired burgers and fries.

The team shared customers can expect a fresh look and an exclusive new menu at this location that will pay homage to the team’s roots.

“This is a bittersweet moment, but we cannot thank you enough for an amazing five years in Cambie Village. We look forward to many more adventures to come,” concluded Potluck.
