Asian grocery stores have been popping up all over Metro Vancouver within the last couple of years, including a new T&T location slated to open in Burnaby’s new Gilmore Place mixed-use complex, Hannam’s newly opened Metrotown spot, and Smart N Save’s new Burnaby location.

Georgia Main Food Group (GMFG), which is behind grocery brands IGA and Fresh St. Market, also opened its own Asian grocery store called Meiga Supermarket in February 2024. However, after a little over a year, the food group has shared that it will be closing the Port Moody store.

“The reason for Meiga’s closing in Port Moody is based on a variety of business factors, and we would like to thank our customers and the community for their support,” said Palle Knudsen, vice president of retail operations at GMFG. “Our human resources and store leadership team will be working closely with our store staff to ensure they are supported during this time of transition.”

For those unfamiliar, Meiga Supermarket, translated from its Chinese name (美萬家) meaning “beautiful family,” is best known for its impressive offerings of Asian snacks and drinks. It also had a Chinese takeout stand alongside prepared sushi and BBQ, a bakery, live crabs, and a whole section dedicated to hot pot ingredients.

Meiga’s final day of operation will be Aug. 8.

However, Georgia Main Food Group did add that it will continue to look for locations and opportunities for Meiga to operate.
