Miss Matchstick? These five new Vancouver cafes could be your next favourite

May 13 2026, 8:56 pm

Many were crestfallen when they heard the news that Matchstick, which had been operating in Vancouver for over a decade, announced it would be ceasing operations and closing all of its locations. The cafe had operated multiple outposts and had become a part of many Vancouverites morning rituals.

However, now that all of its locations have officially closed, many are looking for their next coffee fix. Lucky for them, new cafes have either already opened or will be opening in the former home of these Matchstick locations.

Keep on reading to see the official list of all the new cafes opening in former Matchstick locations.

Located at the former home of Matchstick Yaletown, Octave Cafe is a new, music-themed cafe that has recently opened its doors.

“We treat coffee seriously. We measure carefully, dial in every day, and follow recipes with attention. Milk texture, extraction, and balance are important. Our goal is simple. Every cup should be consistent, clean, and balanced,” wrote the cafe.

Noct. Coffee got its start as an online shop offering specialty drops of its roasts before opening its first brick-and-mortar location at the former Matchstick Riley Park location.

“I started Noct. as a specialty micro-roastery, and I had a dream of creating a space where we could share our passion for coffee and for people to experience what Noct. stands for. We want to become a coffee company that focuses on care from the selection of our green, to our profiles, to how we brew it,” shared the owner on Instagram.

Noct. also shared that it aims to offer a space for folks to slow down, stay a while, and feel at home, offering a “real third space for the neighbourhood.”

Additionally, the space will be split into two different zones. One will be the “re-connect zone” where the cafe will encourage conversation and connection, while the other “re-imagine zone” will be for folks studying, working, or “building your dreams one coffee at a time.”

“We want everyone to feel welcomed to spend time at Noct, but we also want to encourage using the space in a diverse way as well,” said Noct.

While technically more than just a cafe, Mercato di Luigi opened its doors in the former home of Matchstick’s Chinatown location that closed in 2023. Here you can grab a solid espresso or cup of coffee, as well as a selection of Italian goods like pasta, olive oils, meats, cheeses, and more.

Plus, hidden in the back of the space is a wine-focused concept also from the Ask For Luigi team, where you can enjoy plenty of delicious bites in a wine cellar-inspired space. Trust us when we say the vibes here are immaculate.
