Multiple Vancouver breweries win gold at Canada-wide beer awards
As Vancouver locals, we already know there are several standout spots to grab a cold glass of beer in the city, and now we have the awards to back up that claim.
Two Vancouver breweries won gold at this year’s Canadian Brewing Awards in their respective categories.
Powell Street Craft Brewery, located at 1357 Powell St., received gold for its Czech Pilsner in the European and International Pale Lager category, while Strathcona Brewery Inc. received gold for its Imperial Pear Elderflower Love Buzz in the Fruit Beer category.
Other Vancouver winners include R&B Brewing, which received bronze for its Wild Matters Hazy Pale Ale in the Session Beer and Session IPA category.
The Canadian Brewing Awards chooses beers in each category through a blind taste test, and each beer is judged by a panel of at least two judges who select three samples to advance to the next round, or to receive a medal if it’s the final round.
As for rankings, the Canadian Brewing Awards says gold is “a world-class beer that accurately exemplifies the specified style, displaying the proper balance of taste, aroma, and appearance.”
In contrast, silver exemplifies an excellent beer that may slightly deviate from style parameters while maintaining close adherence to the style. Bronze is a fine example of the style that may vary from style parameters and/or have minor defects in taste, aroma, or appearance.
But it wasn’t just breweries in Vancouver proper that received recognition. Other Metro Vancouver winners include:

- Poco Borthers Brewing Ltd. — Amber Ale — Gold in American Red Ale
- Curious Creatures Beer Corp. — Odyssey — Silver in Australian, New Zealand, and International Hoppy Beer
- Smugglers Trail Caskworks — Broken Sun — Bronze in Australian, New Zealand, and International Hoppy Beer
- Train Wreck Brewing — English Pale Ale — Silver in Bitter, English Blonde/Pale Ale, and English IPA
- Four Winds Brewing — Cherryoperis — Bronze in Brett, Wild, and Mixed Culture Beer
- Four Winds Brewing — Blue Dream Hazy IPA —‚ Bronze in Experimental and Specialty IPA
- Four Winds Beach House and Brewery — Dunkelweizen — Gold in German Wheat and Rye Beer
- Mariner Brewing — Winter Ale — Gold in Herb/Spice/Chili/Pumpkin/Rye/Field Beer
- Patina Brewing Co. — Kolsch — Silver in Kölsch and Altbier
- Curious Creatures Beer Corp. — Kome Forest — Silver in Other Hoppy Beer
