Longstanding Metro Vancouver pub to close after 77 years of operation

Recently, numerous long-standing restaurants, such as Joe’s Cafe and Pho Tam Surrey, have closed their doors in Metro Vancouver. Now, a pub that has been operating in Richmond for 77 years has announced it will be closing.
The Joseph Richard Group (JRG) shared that The Buck & Ear pub will be closing its doors.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Steveston community for making The Buck & Ear such a special place for so many years,” said Ryan Moreno, CEO of JRG.
“This pub has been more than just a business—it’s been a gathering place, a home for stories, laughter, and friendships that have lasted a lifetime. While this chapter is closing, we remain committed to Steveston and to honouring the history that The Buck & Ear has been a part of.”
As for the reason for the closure, JRG cited ongoing economic pressures, rising operational costs, fees, and taxes.
However, fans of The Buck & Ear will still be able to enjoy some of their favourite specials at The Steveston Cafe & Hotel next door. Additionally, the pub space will be transformed into additional boutique suites as part of hotel operations for Steveston Cafe & Hotel, and heritage photos from The Buck & Ear will be passed along to the City of Richmond.
“We’re excited to continue serving the community in new ways,” said Moreno. “The new boutique suites will not only enhance the guest experience but also bring more visitors to Steveston, supporting local businesses and contributing to the vibrancy of this incredible neighbourhood.”
The pub’s exact closing date has yet to be announced, but JRG said it will close sometime this spring.

The Buck & Ear is one of the many restaurants owned by the Joseph Richard Group of Companies (JRG). They also own The Henry, Oak and Thorne, and Stanely Park Brewpub, just to name a few.
In July 2023, the group filed for creditor protection. Since then, JRG has closed numerous other restaurants, including the Port Moody restaurant Livelyhood, S+L Kitchen and Bar in Surrey, and Townhall Public House Langley, which had been operating for 15 years.
The Buck & Ear isn’t the only recent closure in Richmond. Just a few blocks away, the Langley-based Five Roads Brewing closed its Steveston taproom.
