What: This festival honours French Canadian, Metis, and Indigenous traditions and is one of Edmonton’s biggest winter celebrations. The Flying Canoë Volant is loosely based on the French Canadian legend of the Flying Canoe. Take in stunning, illuminated scenes and live performers for a memorable night in Edmonton’s French Quarter.

What: Grab your jersey, head down to Rogers Place, and cheer on the Oilers this week as they face off twice on home ice. Monday is a matchup against the Anaheim Ducks, while on Thursday, the Oilers play the San Jose Sharks.

What: Lace up those skates and wear your warmest winter jacket. Skating during the holidays is perfect, and there are several spots across Edmonton you can go to. It’s some of the best fun you can have for free in the city.

Go tobogganing

What: Whether you’re an adult or a child, tobogganing is one heck of a way to pass the time during the winter. Check out the U of A Observatory

What: Catch incredible views of our solar system at the University of Alberta’s Observatory. Every Thursday, the observatory opens to the public, and visitors are welcome to drop by any time during select visiting hours. (The observatory closes if the temperature falls to -20°C or lower.)

What: Right in the heart of downtown, the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) has been Edmonton’s go-to for art and culture for 100 years. With rotating exhibitions, workshops, and events, it’s the perfect spot to get inspired, learn something new, or just soak up some creativity.

AGA admission is free from 4 to 7 p.m. on the final Thursday of every month.

When: Open Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Fridays to Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
