What Edmonton’s new $153M velodrome and rec centre looks like inside

Edmonton’s long-anticipated rec centre and indoor velodrome is finally opening soon, and we got an early look inside the swanky new facility.

The $153.4-million facility, located in Coronation Park near 111th Avenue and 142nd Street, will serve both community recreation and high-performance sport. It includes amenities like a fitness centre, training studio, walking and running track with a 333-metre outer lane, and a 250-metre Category A indoor cycling track with seating for up to 940 spectators.

Construction on the project began in Spring 2022 following a 2021 design phase. It will open to the public on Tuesday, Jan. 27, ahead of schedule, and before its opening, the media were invited to check out all that it has to offer.

We’re especially looking forward to the urban court feature, which will serve as a space where anybody can drop in for a game of basketball or simply hang out at the “social staircase” located in the court. Each step has an outlet, perfect for charging your phone or if you just want to hang out while catching up on schoolwork.

It also connects to the newly rehabilitated Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre with a 50-metre pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, and a new cold plunge, the City’s first, plus a bouldering wall, multi-purpose courts, an “urban court,” a spin studio, indoor playground, child-minding area, Canadian Sport Institute office, and a Second Cup.

With a pool, track, and cycling loop all under one roof, Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre becomes the first indoor triathlon training facility in North America.

In addition to the new cold plunge, the Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre is noticeably brighter than it was pre-pandemic. Pool access is now handled at the rec centre’s front entrance, while the former lobby has been repurposed as a foyer, with change room access located to the left of the entrance.

The Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will host its public grand opening celebration on Friday, Jan. 30, at 11 a.m. The event will feature speeches and activities for families.
