Soak it up: Edmonton will see a 5 p.m. sunset soon

Jan 23 2026, 5:13 pm

While the temperature may be punishingly cold right now, there’s at least one thing we can look forward to. The sun is about to start setting after 5 p.m. in Edmonton.

Today is the final day this winter when the sun dips below the horizon before 5 p.m. The sun will set this evening at 4:59 p.m., marking the end of the city’s darkest stretch of the season.

Daylight has been slowly returning since the winter solstice, but this is when that extra light starts to feel noticeable. Each evening brings a little more light, and by the end of January, the sun won’t set until around 5:15 p.m.

Mornings are improving too, with the sun rising earlier as the Earth continues its seasonal shift. Winter still has a firm grip on the city, but things are literally tilting in our favour!

Before we know it, spring will be on its way, and freezing at the bus stop or chipping our cars out of the frozen ground will be a thing of the past. And in a handful of months, we’ll be basking in those 11 p.m. sunsets in the summer that we love so much in Edmonton.
