As 2025 comes to a close, we’re looking back at some of the most memorable lottery wins in Edmonton this year.

These winners all hail from the Edmonton area, proving that while the odds of hitting it big are slim, a little luck can still go a long way.

From a man who showed up dressed as Elvis to claim his prize to another who used his winnings to buy a one-way ticket out of Alberta, here are six of Edmonton’s luckiest lottery winners of 2025:

Michel Chauvin and Darlene Klassen, Sherwood Park: $100,000

Michel Chauvin and Darlene Klassen were happy when they checked three of their Lotto 6/49 tickets, netting two Free Plays before the third revealed they had scored $100,000 on the May 28 Extra draw.

“The machine went ‘Woohoo!’ and we saw ‘Free Play’ on the screen,” Klassen explained to the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) while claiming the prize. “The second one was a Free Play as well, then the machine went ‘Woohoo!’ and we won $100,000!”

The couple said they don’t have any specific plans for their windfall, but they’re very happy to have the extra money.

“We’re both retired,” said Chauvin. “[The win] won’t change our life, but it’s like a bonus for us!”

Karen Agate, Larry Cooper, Terry Nyquvest, Dana Gray, Linda Weatherbee, Brad Neal, and Christine Laschuk, Sherwood Park: $100,000

It’s been a lucky past few years for this group of coworkers who have struck major lottery wins twice this decade. The friends and coworkers have been lottery subscribers together for quite some time now, and it’s paid off; they took home over $100,000 in 2021 and say they plan to continue playing together.

Alex Larson, Sherwood Park: $1,000,020

Alex Larson didn’t plan on making an early round of golf the most memorable part of his morning, but a lottery win did the trick. A banking professional from Sherwood Park, Larson found out he had won $1,000,020 from the Aug. 1 Maxmillions draw while checking his email before heading out for a round of golf with his boss.

“I was playing golf — real early tee time with my boss — and just checking my email,” Larson said.

“I shared the news, and he was pretty excited for me — there were a lot of high-fives,” he laughed. “Actually, he said, ‘Breakfast is on you today!’”

Larson said he plans to invest most of his winnings but also leave room for some fun, including a new set of golf clubs and travels to Iceland, Switzerland, and Italy.

Peter Woloshyn, Spruce Grove: $1 million

Peter Woloshyn showed up all shook up to claim his $1 million prize, dressed head to toe as Elvis Presley. After matching the Maxmillions selection in the Aug. 15 draw, Woloshyn said he phoned ahead to ask whether a costume was required for the prize claim interview.

“They said no, and that I just couldn’t wear a disguise,” he said with a smile. “So, I talked with my son and his girlfriend and got them to order me an Elvis costume to wear.”

Bao Tran, Edmonton: $1 million

Bao Tran treated his new wife to some lavish items after becoming a millionaire in a draw this spring. He was happy enough when he thought he’d won $100,000 on Lotto 6/49, but after he showed a friend his winning ticket, he realized he had actually won a crisp $1,000,000.

“I just got married in Vietnam, and I’m going to surprise my wife by purchasing a house and a new car for her,” he said.

Thanh Lu, Edmonton: $30 million

Canadian lottery winner plans to leave Alberta with $30M win

Thanh Lu scored it big on the Lotto 6/49 draw on Feb. 5, and immediately began making plans to pack his suitcase.

“I want to get out of here,” he laughed. “I am thinking of moving to B.C. for nicer weather and property on the waterfront.”

In addition to his big move, he said he plans to donate some winnings to his church.
