Thanh Lu has plans to leave Alberta after winning $30 million in the lottery.
The Edmonton man discovered his Lotto 6/49 win slowly, checking the numbers a few digits at a time over the course of four days.
“I checked on the website and saw that someone in Edmonton had won,” he said. “I took my ticket and checked the last two digits and put it away again.”
“I did the same thing each day, and after the fourth day, I had matched all the numbers and knew I had won,” he continued. “I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was screaming and woke up the household.”
It’s unclear why he chose to take his time verifying the win, but he knows exactly what he wants to do next.
“I want to get out of here,” he laughed. “I am thinking of moving to B.C. for nicer weather and property on the waterfront.”
He also plans to donate some of his winnings to his church.
Lu had been hoping to win for a long time.
“Even $250,000 would have been good,” he said. “This is a big relief.”
Lu won on the Gold Ball Draw on Feb. 5 with the selection 36445721-02, a Gold Ball. He bought his winning ticket at Food Master M&M on 132nd Ave. NW in Edmonton.
