The Edmonton Oilers’ love of Chappell Roan has taken the hockey world by storm, but the reason why has been hard to come by.
Since the start of the playoffs, the Oilers have blasted Chappell’s iconic hit song “Pink Pony Club” in the dressing room after every victory. It hasn’t replaced “La Bamba,” which has been the team’s victory song for several seasons now, but it has become a solid addition to the rotation.
“Pink Pony Club” has now cemented itself as a pivotal part of this year’s Oilers playoff lore, and it has been wholeheartedly embraced by the fanbase. It’s become routine to have the song blast throughout the arena in the last minute if a win is all but assured.
Why the Oilers picked this song is a mystery, as nobody will give a straight answer. Offside tried to uncover the reason after Friday’s morning skate, but could only get a few words out of each player.
Connor Brown at least gave a little bit of insight into the victory song.
“I think we’re just keeping it in house,” Brown said of the true reason. “I think that’s the name of the game right now.
“I think we kind of put it on when our team was looking for a little spark. There’s been some spark behind it, so that’s been fun.”

Some players didn’t even let us finish asking the question. At the first sign of “Pink Pony Club” being mentioned, Corey Perry had a very matter-of-fact answer.
“I’m gonna stop you right there, I don’t know,” Perry told Offside. “That’s all I got.”
The secrecy has only added to the intrigue around why the team chose Chappell Roan as part of their victory playlist. Fans are not only singing along, but they’re also bringing Pink Pony props to games as well.
Even Wayne Gretzky wanted to know more about the song following the team’s Game 1 Stanley Cup Final victory.
Fortunately, we were able to gather some details from the players. When Adam Henrique was asked, he deferred the question to backup goalie Calvin Pickard, implying that the journeyman could have some ties to the origin of the song’s use.
“I’m going to defer to Picks on that,” Henrique said with a sly smile.
Unfortunately, Offside was not able to follow up with Pickard on that question. When he was asked about the song by Postmedia’s Steven Sandor before the Final, he garnered another cryptic answer.
The next question was when exactly the team decided to adopt Chappell Roan as a celebratory tune. Stuart Skinner gave us a bit of a hint that it happened at the end of the season, when he was battling an injury.
“I was injured at the time… that’s when I had the concussion,” Skinner said. “I was getting the group text, and I was feeling a bit left out. I didn’t really know what was going on.”
“Pink Pony Club” is a song about embracing your true self, fighting through adversity, and not caring what others think about you. The Oilers have been consistently doubted throughout this postseason, and perhaps they see a bit of themselves in the song’s message.
All we know is that Pickard potentially has ties to the origin, it was picked up late in the season, and that nobody wants to talk about it.
