The Arkells helped prove that home-ice advantage has some real benefits.
The Canadian rock band performed a concert outside of Rogers Place ahead of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers. It was their first show in a few months, resulting in them going through their entire set to make sure it was up to par. That was far from ideal for the Panthers, who happened to be staying at the hotel right across the street.
“We’re sound checking this morning from 11 to 12, and we’ve been on stage making a lot of racket,” lead singer Max Keman explained to Oilers Nation. “We hadn’t played a gig for a couple months, so we were just kind of running through the entire set.
“And then our tour manager comes up to us and says, ‘Guys, we want you to know, the Panthers are trying to sleep, and they’re on Eastern Time zone. We’re getting complaints.’ So you’re welcome, Edmonton.”

It may have worked out to the Oilers’ advantage, as they were able to take Game 1 thanks to a 4-3 overtime victory. It was an incredibly important opening game for the Oilers, who trailed the Panthers 3-0 in last year’s Cup Final before storming back to force a Game 7.
Game 2 between the Oilers and Panthers will get underway at Rogers Place later this evening. There will be another free concert at the Ice District for fans to attend, this time featuring The Glorious Sons and Triumph.
Gates for tonight’s concert will open at 3 p.m. MDT, while the performance will get underway at 3:40 p.m.
