Alberta is known for its natural beauty, and now it has found itself on a prestigious list by National Geographic detailing the top travel destinations of 2026.

The world-renowned magazine just released its 25 breathtaking places in the world to travel to for 2026, and three spots in Canada made the cut.

The year’s must-visit destinations were handpicked by National Geographic’s editors, photographers, and adventurers, with Alberta’s Banff landing on the list.

A big reason Banff landed on the list was its ranking as the Readers’ Choice Winner for Best of the World 2026.

“This stunning alpine jewel achieves what few destinations can: a perfect harmony between cosmopolitan energy and untamed nature, where you can sip locally roasted artisan coffee on Banff Avenue one moment and spot a wandering grizzly bear the next,” the magazine stated.

Banff also landed on the list thanks to its vast number of hiking trails, glaciers, bright blue lakes (hello there, Peyto and Moraine Lake), and a historic mountain hotel that looks like a castle.

Banff itself is no stranger to the spotlight. It has a pretty impressive track record, being named one of the most picturesque places in the world earlier this year, and also recognized as one of the most beautiful places in the world by Architectural Digest.

It’s also caught the eye of many celebrities over the years, with Justin and Hailey Bieber recently spending time at the iconic Lake Louise, country superstar Luke Combs praising it during his stay a couple of years back, and Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston calling the town and surrounding attractions “stupidly gorgeous” after his visit.

National Geographic has also not been shy in showing some love to Alberta, naming one surprising Alberta spot a must-visit this summer, these locations in southern Alberta as one of the most unforgettable family destinations across Canada, and even placing it on a similar travel list back in 2023.
