A Malaysian restaurant is closing its doors in Calgary after being open for just a little over a year.

Makan Malaysian Cuisine, located in Kensington, announced on Instagram that it will be closing, with its final day open on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, just over a year after opening.

“After much consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to permanently close our Kensington location,” the post read.

Makan Malaysian Cuisine offered dishes right in Calgary, including nasi lemak, laksa, and Sabah-style Butter Chicken, bringing a less common cuisine to the city’s food scene.

It opened in April 2025, taking over the old Jus Fruit space in Kensington.

“We’ll be stepping away for now to focus on some important personal priorities, but this isn’t goodbye,” the post continued, hinting at a possible return in the future.

Makan Malaysian Cuisine is the latest in a growing list of Calgary restaurants to close or announce plans to shut down, joining spots like Pimlico Bar, Frenchie by UNA, and Murrieta’s.
