Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom shows off vintage Heritage Classic gear

Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom is going to be looking fresh at the 2023 Heritage Classic happening on Sunday.

The veteran goaltender was seen showing off his vintage-inspired setup at Flames practice at the Saddledome on Monday morning.

There is something uniquely Calgary about the design. The vertical red and cream stripes help give a retro feel to the set-up while also feeling modern. There is no doubt that these will look superb with the Flames’ Heritage Classic jersey, which took heavy inspiration from the Calgary Stampeders hockey club that played in the 1940s.

Fans on social media seem to really like the new look.

Markstrom isn’t the only goalie at the Heritage Classic who will be sporting a new set of gear. Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner also showed off what he will be wearing on Monday morning as well.

The news is certainly a good change of pace for the event, as both teams recently learned that they might be without some top players for the actual game. The Flames are waiting to see if defenceman Rasmus Andersson’s four-game suspension will be reduced through an appeal, while the Oilers could be without Connor McDavid, who was injured over the weekend.

As for some other aesthetic news around the event, the NHL recently revealed what the field at Commonwealth Stadium will look like. Giant hockey players and a unique pipeline design seem to be the focal points.

The starting goalie for the Flames at the Heritage Classic hasn’t been confirmed yet, but if Markstrom gets the nod between the pipes, it would be his first time playing in an NHL outdoor game.

For fans who are making the trip to Edmonton to watch the game, there are a lot of off-ice events to keep you entertained. Alberta’s own Nickelback is putting on a show during the second intermission, and The Beaches will be performing a free concert before the game at the neighbouring Clarke Stadium.

If you want to make a weekend out of it, there will also be a free festival happening at the Fan Park in the Ice District, featuring an appearance by the Stanley Cup, running from October 27 to 28.

Tickets are still available on the Ticketmaster website.
