There’s still so much summer left to enjoy, so let’s make the most of it! From Brewery & The Beast to Chinatown Street Festival, outdoor yoga to concerts in the park, here are 103 fun things to do in Calgary this month.

Get Outside

Sylvan Lake Aqua Splash

What: The Sylvan Lake Aqua Splash is a giant inflatable obstacle course big enough for adults to jump around on. The gigantic floating fortress features a 15-foot tower, a climbing wall, a launch bag, a trapeze swing, and basically anything else you could ever imagine. Located, as the name suggests, on Sylvan Lake, the aqua park can be found just west of Red Deer, meaning that it is only an hour and a half drive from Calgary for a full day of fun on the lake.

Wetland Bug Safari

What’s up with Bow Habitat Station

What: Explore Alberta’s wildlife and natural spaces on the first Friday of the month. Visit investigation stations in the Discovery Centre to discover the wildlife that make their home right here in Calgary! Join in a large group activity at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, or 2:30 pm to discover how wildlife has adapted to city life with special guests from Alberta Parks. Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society will be hosting an investigation station all about some furry and feathered friends you might find in our city.

Hands-on activities are designed for learners ages two and up.

Conversations in the Garden

What: On the second Wednesday of every month this summer, head to the Calgary Horticultural Society’s garden (at the rear of the building) for a relaxing evening of gardening chat with horticulturist, Kath Smyth and fellow gardeners. Bring your lawn chair, a mug, your love of gardening and of course all your gardening questions. Tips to share are wonderful too.

Explore the city

Tour de Bowness

What: Get a taste of what the Tour de France is like at the 18th Annual Tour de Bowness. For three days you will have the opportunity to watch cyclists from various viewpoints throughout the city as they compete for a variety of titles and prizes. This event started in 2001 and is now the largest amateur bike race in the province. The Tour de Bowness will be adding hand cycling to the event in 2019, and stick around on Monday to enjoy the Tour de Bowness Street Festival put on by the Bowness BRZ.

Floating Lantern Peace Ceremony

What: The Floating Lantern Peace Ceremony will be held in downtown Calgary on August 3, marking “a wish for a peaceful society and a world free from violence, especially the ultimate violence, nuclear weapons,” a release from organizers states. The event is free for all to attend, with lanterns being rented out to minimum donations of $5.

Heritage Park Midway Adult-Only Night 2019

What: Heritage Park will be hosting an adults-only night this Friday, August 9, inviting those aged 18 and older out for a night of drinks, food, rides, and not a kid in sight. Running from 7 to 10 pm, the special night will feature an amped up menu that includes Alberta beef sliders, duck confit poutine, and handmade chicken corndogs.

Of course, it’s not an adult-only night without some adult beverages, and the event will not disappoint by providing Big Rock beer and cider, Eau Claire Distillery cocktails, and Okanagan Valley wine. You may want to hold off on all the alcohol before hitting the rides, however, as the Heritage park midway’s carousel, whip, dangler swings, and caterpillar will all be operational.

Slam Festival 2019

What: Hosted by the Alberta River Surfing Association, the surf festival invites thousands of people to experience a vision of an Urban Beach that combines art, culture, sport, and recreation in a single event. The list of events is extensive, from skate contests, live broadcasts, mock-tails on the beach, live music, live and interactive art, and of course, river surfing. The festival will also host surf competitions, a luau, floating the bow, and fitness activities.

Calgary Japanese Festival 2019

What: The annual festival will feature authentic Japanese customs, traditional music, dance, and song shows and martial arts demos. This year’s Japanese Festival will once again be held at the Max Bell Centre instead of its original place at the Bowness Community Centre. The family-friendly event and will include games and bouncy houses, galleries of local Japanese arts, and crafts food kiosks serving traditional Japanese cuisine.

Brooks Medieval Faire 2019

What: The Brooks Medieval Faire is back for its 16-year anniversary at the Silver Sage Rodeo Grounds in the Canadian Badlands on Saturday, August 10, and Sunday, August 11. The Faire has been the largest gathering of medieval and historical reenactment in all of western Canada since it started in 2003. Every year, families and friends are encouraged to join in on the festivities that take attendees on a trip back in time. Costumes are encouraged and yes, there will be actors improvising medieval storylines for your entertainment.

Adult Night: Movie Night at the Calgary Zoo – Jumanji

What: On August 22, the Calgary Zoo will open its doors at 6 pm for an adults-only movie night screening of the original Jumanji. The event also includes a delicious BBQ, adult beverages, and fun games and activities before the movie begins screening at 8:30 pm.

Tickets are $50 + GST per head, and all event proceeds will support Calgary Zoo’s conservation efforts. Each ticket covers everything you need for a fun night, including admission (with admittance as early as 4 pm), a Jumanji-themed self-tour, the chance to win two tickets to the Zoo’s Panda Breakfast, adult drinks being sold at multiple bars, a BBQ, and of course, the screening of the movie.

Taber Cornfest

Make the Leaf 2019

What: Calgarians are invited to help make the world’s largest human maple leaf and take the title from Vancouver on Labour Day weekend. The event, called Make the Leaf, will attempt to break the current record on the grounds of Fort Calgary on Saturday, August 31.

Tickets cost $35, buying you lunch and a commemorative t-shirt. Early bird tickets for $30 will be available until July 31. The money fundraised for this event will go towards the non-profit BRAVE, an organization that helps to educate children on how to prevent being recruited for trafficking.
