Calgary aims to steal Vancouver’s largest human maple leaf world record
Calgarians are invited to help make the world’s largest human maple leaf and take the title from Vancouver on Labour Day weekend.
“We’d like to beat the record soundly, so we’re shooting for 5000 people,” said Wes Nelson, the event’s organizer, in a release.
“We invite local businesses, groups, families, and individuals to participate in this demonstration of Calgary pride.”

The event, called Make the Leaf, will attempt to break the current record on the grounds of Fort Calgary on Saturday, August 31.
Tickets cost $35, buying you lunch and a commemorative t-shirt. Early bird tickets for $30 will be available until July 31.
The money fundraised for this event will go towards the non-profit BRAVE, an organization that helps to educate children on how to prevent being recruited for trafficking.
Vancouver currently holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest human maple leaf. To celebrate Canada Day, 1,589 people stood in the shape of a maple leaf at Grouse Mountain, BC on July 1, 2017.
Winnipeg tried to beat the record at one point, recruiting over 3,600 people — unfortunately for them, they didn’t meet the requirements for an official world record.
If a minimum number of 1,600 people sign-up for Make the Leaf, the event will happen rain or shine.
