Calgary’s annual surf festival is happening this weekend and we can’t wait to start waxing our boards!
The Slam Festival, which is taking place in Calgary for the third year in a row since its inception in 2007, will happen from August 9 to August 10 by the 10th Street Wave (on Bow River) and its nearby “Urban Beach” area.

Hosted by the Alberta River Surfing Association, the surf festival invites thousands of people to experience a vision of an Urban Beach that combines art, culture, sport, and recreation in a single event.
The list of events is extensive, from skate contests, live broadcasts, mock-tails on the beach, live music, live and interactive art, and of course, river surfing.
The festival will also host surf competitions, a luau, floating the bow, and fitness activities.

“Surfing isn’t just about riding waves. It’s about spending time near the water and experiencing flow whether it’s surfing, dancing to music, creating or viewing art, or skateboarding. This is surf culture,” said Jacob Kelly Quinlan, vice president of the Alberta River Surfing Association, in a release.
The festival features several events — a full list of events and times can be found here — and has specially mapped out spaces for art, music, and fitness.
