National Indigenous People’s Day: Community Paddle and Feast

What: Celebrate National Indigenous People’s Day in a canoe or watch from the pier as Ta-ah Amy George and Cultural Leader Charlene Aleck lead a water blessing ceremony for the Burrard Inlet. Hear the different songs and witness the traditional ocean-going canoes from neighbouring First Nations. Share in a community feast, and enjoy live entertainment and a giveaway.

NOSH Foodie Fest

What: NOSH Foodie Fest is a weekly, food-centric event taking place in the parking lot at Capilano Mall every Saturday in June. This free to attend event centred around food truck-hopping will tempt one’s taste buds, fill one’s belly, and no doubt put all foodies into a legit food coma. Rounding out the tantalizing event menu will be other activities including the “PB & Jam” DJ Booth and “There’s A Little Something On Your Face” Face Painting Station.

Greater Vancouver Food Truck Festival 2019

What: The Greater Vancouver Food Truck Festival is back for its sixth year featuring delicious grub-on-wheels, drinks, and more. This year brings drool-worthy events from the Fraser Valley Food Truck Association, each featuring 28 trucks to enjoy.

North Vancouver’s Shipyards Night Market

What: Gathering some of Vancouver’s best food vendors, this free event will feature a full farmers’ and artisan marketplace along with local food trucks and live entertainment weekly until 10 pm. Shipbuilders’ Square in North Vancouver will be transformed into a vibrant night market with 100+ vendors. Attendees can expect to chow down on grub from 40+ food trucks in “hot food alley” and enjoy live entertainment all summer long. The Friday Night Market will also feature a 19+ beer garden, serving local craft beer and cider as well as Betty’s Vodka Iced Tea.

Public Disco Laneway Series 2019

What: Vancouver’s Public Disco pop-up events will make its return this summer, transforming outdoor spaces into daytime dance parties. The 2019 Laneway Series is an all-ages summer concert series in partnership with Creative BC, Downtown Vancouver, FACTOR, and Granville Island Brewing. The Disco will be most similar to past events held by the group, showcasing feel-good music from up-and-coming artists and curated dance performances. The Laneway Cabaret will feature live music acts ranging from folk to hip hop, with DJs throughout the day.

West Vancouver Bridge Festival

What: West Vancouver’s long-standing Community Day is being transformed into Bridge Festival —  a two-day multicultural event taking place on May 31 and June 1 at Ambleside Park. This new festival will include interactive cultural pavilions, live musical performances, a parade, delicious food from around the world, and much more.

There will be two full evenings of free concerts at the main stage in Ambleside Park, a number of food trucks, and showcases of culture by West Vancouver residents who will share the customs and traditions of their diverse ethnic identities.

House of Vans — Vancouver

What:  You can enjoy skating at a custom indoor skatepark designed in partnership with the skateboard community, listen to live music, check out art installations, join a workshop, play games (ring toss, anyone?), and much more. From May 30 to June 2, Vans will be bringing their legendary House of Vans pop-up to Vancouver — for the first time ever. Taking place at the Harbour Event Centre, the densely-packed, four-day celebration is somewhere that you can let your imagination loose and find creative inspiration around every corner.

Thursday Artist Talk: Doreen Brust Johnson, “A Dream is to Write”

What: Canadian historical fiction novelist Doreen Brust Johnson tells her story of writing novels while having no formal education beyond grade eleven. She will take you through her early years growing up on a small farm in Saskatchewan to where she is now: a published author with three books titled Walking Barefoot in my ShoesSounds in My Shadow, and Momma, Momma, the Preacher’s Comin’.  In addition to sharing her writing journey and how she navigated the publishing world, Doreen will tell stories of northern prairie life, making history come alive. Copies of her books will be available to purchase at the talk.

What: The annual Surrey Fest Downtown promotes and celebrates community pride through a day of fun and entertainment for all ages while providing a venue for groups and organizations to inform the community of their services. As many as 4,000 people visit the festival each year to view the exhibits and enjoy food and live entertainment.

Lafarge Lake Annual Free Fishing Day

What: A free family-friendly day of fishy fun and prizes during BC’s free fishing weekend – when anglers can fish BC’s waters without a licence. The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC will be stocking the lake with rainbow trout in the morning, kids are welcome to assist the hatchery staff during the stocking. There will be a netted area for new fishermen who have no experiences in catching trout. Experts will be on site to teach participants new techniques on catching rainbow trout. Other activities include fly tying, casting lessons and salmon raffle. Some fantastic prizes will be given away at the end of the event.

Dog Days of Summer at Hastings Racecourse

What: The Dog Days of Summer series is returning to Hastings Racecourse. Next up on the weekend of June 22 and 23 are the heartwarming Corgi Races. Last year, we saw the inaugural corgi races bring adorable (and hysterical) moments to the North Renfrew race track, with four-legged athletes competing for the “Top Corgi” prize. On the weekend of July 13 and 14, you can take in all of the action at the iconic Wiener Dog Races at Hastings Racecourse. Enjoy a pack of incredibly excited Dachshunds racing.
