Language Matters: Exploring Indigenous Language Through Art

What: How do urban Indigenous community members engage with their traditional languages? Language plays an essential role in transmitting history, values, and traditional practices. lululemon Summer Yoga Series at False Creek 2019

What: lululemon’s popular Summer Yoga Series is returning to Vancouver for another summer. Participants of any age or skill level will be able to take part in their classes at the recently-opened Concord Community Park in False Creek. Each session, which takes place every Monday at 6 pm through the end of August, will be held on the scenic seawall at the Northeast False Creek area. In addition to the free yoga classes, the community park space also features beach volleyball, half-court basketball, ping-pong, and pickup floor hockey games designated for youth in the community.

CBC Musical Nooners

What: Free, live music concerts will be happening every weekday on the CBC Vancouver outdoor stage. Grab your lunch, your friends, your kids or your co-workers and join the 10th season of CBC Musical Nooners. The opening concert on July 5 features The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer with Dawn Pemberton. Other performers include The Hamiltones (July 18), Jim Byrnes (July 25), Petunia and the Vipers (August 7), and Sister Speak on August 16.

Free Outdoor Movies in Stanley Park – Beetlejuice

What: One of the most popular summertime events in the city is back as free outdoor movies return to Stanley Park this summer. The Evo Summer Cinema Series this week features Beetlejuice on a four-story inflatable movie screen. Be there before dusk and take part in the many fun pre-show activities, including games, prizes, and giveaways, as well as the weekly offering of food truck fare and classic movie treats.

Please bring your own blankets and/or lawn chairs and, since it’s a family-friendly event, smoking or alcohol is not permitted. Moviegoers are encouraged to walk, take transit, or bike to Stanley Park for the shows  – there will be a bike valet service offered on site each night too.

BC Superweek 2019 – New West Grand Prix

What: The New West Grand Prix is the latest addition to the BC Superweek race series. The criterium-style race features a mass start and a 935-metre circuit that cyclists navigate for an expected 45-55 laps. More than 200 men’s and women’s cyclists will pass by every minute, making the New West Grand Prix a thrilling spectator experience.

Noontime Notes at Central City

What: Come to Central City’s outdoor Plaza and enjoy free live lunchtime music. A wide array of musical offerings is showcased including rock, jazz, country, and more.

Music by the River 2019

What: This summer concert series will take place against the Fraser River backdrop every Tuesday and Thursday nights in July. The Eats at the Pier concession stand will be serving drinks from New West’s own Steel and Oak Brewing Co. and Pacific Breeze winery. The entire park will be one massive site-licensed area between 5 to 9 pm, allowing you to take your drink anywhere within the park.

Summer Movie Nights on the Square – Pitch Perfect

What: Vancouver’s free outdoor movie series in downtown at šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square (formerly Vancouver Art Gallery’s North Plaza) features Pitch Perfect on July 10. Fresh Air Cinema’s large four-storey inflatable screen will pop up, creating the perfect urban environment to take in a flick surrounded by the concrete jungle — just be sure to bring your lawn chairs and/or blankets.

Hosted by the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, each night will have special activations for the public to enjoy, including photo booths, light displays, food trucks, and more.

BC Superweek 2019 – Global Relay Gastown

What: The Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix is one of the most historic cycling events in North America and boasts the highest one-day prize purse for both the winning prize and total prize purse for a Canadian Criterium. Trigger Me This

Queen + Adam Lambert 2019 Rhapsody Tour

What: The British rockers and the American singer are back together for a revamped Rhapsody tour that will feature a brand new larger-than-life production. The six-week North American tour will kick off in Vancouver on July 10 at Rogers Arena and will see Brian May, Roger Taylor, and Adam Lambert perform in arenas across the US and Canada.

Lansdowne Centre Drive-In Movie Series – Oceans 8

What: The Drive-In Movie Series returns to Lansdowne Centre for its fourth year, presented by Fresh Air Cinema. Enjoy Oceans 8 on an outdoor screen. Take a drive and cuddle up, or bring a blanket and lawn chair and settle in. Parking is on a first-come, first-served basis (first 200 vehicles), and the movie audio will be broadcast over FM radio. Artist Talk: Sara Khan + Zoya Siddiqui

What: Meet Sara Khan at the Surrey Art Gallery for an in-depth discussion of the works on display in Suraj Kinare. Snack ‘N Snap 2019 at Metropolis at Metrotown

What: Snack ‘N Snap is an exhibit featuring tons of food and huge displays of sweets and snacks at Metropolis at Metrotown Grand Court from July 11 to 28 this summer. Take a break from shopping to admire, Snapchat, Instagram, and drool over the ginormous food displays that will be there like a giant pink donut, ten-foot lollipop tree, cupcake house, eight-foot pretzel, and huge melting popsicles.

There will be free samples from sweet and savoury food retailers, pop-up treat carts, and ‘Workshop Wednesdays’ to make DIY your own treats. Then try your hand at the Guess The Jellybeans contest. Ozzy Osbourne: No More Tours 2 at Rogers Arena

What: All aboard! Ozzy Osbourne, better known as the Prince of Darkness is bringing “No More Tours 2” to Vancouver. Over the course of his career, he’s sold more than 38 million albums worldwide, received a handful of Grammy nominations, and seen numerous albums hit platinum status. Osborne will be performing with Megadeth as his special guest. This is the first time that Megadeth will join the superstar on a full tour, although they’ve previously performed at festivals together.

Lawn Summer Nights

What: Four evenings of cocktails and costumes in an anannual fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Started in 2009 here in Vancouver, Lawn Summer Nights (LSN) now holds events in eighteen cities across the country and has raised over $3.4 million. The Vancouver team slots have already sold out, but guests can join in on the fun with a social ticket and see why LSN continues to be a growing force of fundraising and fun.
