New coffee shop with Indonesian roots opens its doors in Vancouver (PHOTOS)

A coffee spot that originated in North Jakarta, Indonesia, has quietly opened its doors in East Vancouver.

Pennyroyal Coffee has taken over the former location of Aer Cafe at 2263 East Hastings Street. The 16-seat spot is now open and serving up Indonesian coffees, classic French baking, and simple daily brunch too.

The original location opened in a small back alley in North Jakarta, Indonesia, back in 2015, where owner Maxime Tremblay and her partner learned all about local coffees and beyond.

After a couple of years, the pair closed up that shop and decided to move to Canada (Tremblay’s home country) and eventually settled in Vancouver in 2017.

Two years after landing here and soaking up the local food and coffee scene with stints at 49th Parallel, Elysian Coffee, and Purebread, it was time to open Pennyroyal 2.0 in the Hastings Sunrise area.

Now, patrons can head into the shop and enjoy high-end Indonesian coffees and some of the best Sumatran coffee in North America, among other things.

“Indonesia is a country that has been seriously upping its coffee game in the last few years, and we’re super excited at the opportunity to help bring these new and unique flavours to Canada,” says Tremblay.

Pennyroyal also offers a constant rotation of special, small-batch coffees from both local and international roasters.

“I still remember that one cup that instantly and completely changed my outlook on what coffee could be, and I hope to bring that same experience to as many people as I can,” says Tremblay.

When it comes to eats here, Tremblay’s partner Cyn, who is classically trained in French baking, is at the helm of that program.

Think pastries like Canelés de Bordeaux, Financiers, and Pâte à Choux along with classics like scones, cookies, and cheesecake.

For brunch, Pennyroyal is keeping it simple for now with avocado toast, breakfast sandwiches, and home-made muesli.

Please note Pennyroyal is closed on Tuesdays.
