'Not an easy decision': Vancouver bubble tea shop to close after 22 years

There have been lots of shakeups when it comes to the food and drink scene at UBC’s Vancouver campus. From closures like JamJar Canteen to exciting openings like Hungry Zus and the Vancouver debut of Rosie’s Burgers, there have been plenty of changes in recent months. Unfortunately, one of those changes will be the closure of Pearl Fever, which has operated its UBC location for 22 years.

“This was not an easy decision for us. We explored every possible option to continue, but due to factors beyond our control, we ultimately had to move forward with this difficult step,” shared the bubble tea shop on Instagram.

Pearl Fever operates multiple locations throughout Metro Vancouver, including in Surrey, Langley, and Coquitlam. Its UBC location was its only outpost in Vancouver.

“We have been proud and honoured to be part of the UBC community since 2004, and we are truly thankful for the countless memories, friendships, every visit, and every cup shared over the past 20+ years,” added Pearl Fever.

While the final day to grab a bubble tea at its UBC location will be Sunday, May 17, Pearl Fever did add that its drinks will continue to be available at Da Bao by UBC Food Services at the IKB building, with an expanded menu launching in September.

Many fans of Pearl Fever took to the comments of the announcement post to share how much they would miss the location.

“So sorry to hear! You’re by far my favourite Bubble tea place 😢😢 bubble tea got us through many exams and late night study sessions,” said one person.

“Nooo……I’ve been coming here since I was five. Thanks for all the memories,” shared another.

“So many first year memories with pineapple green tea😭😭😭,” added a third.
