A Transport truck that stopped underneath a Metro Vancouver overpass during the first snowfall of the year sparked a flurry of questions about whether it was the latest overpass collision in the region.

But as it turns out, the company that contracted the truck to transport its wire coils says the cargo arrived safe and sound at its destination and that there was no impact.

Joel Higgins of Roliprojects tells Daily Hive the driver had stopped to lower the truck’s suspension as an extra precaution given the icy conditions.

Images of Highway 1 eastbound in Burnaby showed the truck stopped under the Gilmore Street overpass with part of its load under the bridge and part outside of it.

Burnaby RCMP told Daily Hive they were aware of the incident but weren’t certain impact occurred.

“We have opened a file to determine the circumstances, including whether the truck made any contact with the overpass,” Mounties told Daily Hive Urbanized.

Although the Burnaby incident turned out not to be the latest overpass crash, Metro Vancouver still didn’t make it through the week without another over-height truck hitting something.

Richmond RCMP are investigating a report that a transport truck smacked into the top of the Massey Tunnel just after 8 pm on January 10. A woman driving directly behind the truck told police the truck hit the tunnel, came to a stop, and proceeded to drive through.

“Based on the subsequent investigation, Richmond RCMP believe they have identified the trailer involved. Richmond RCMP are working on identifying the driver and ask that the driver contact police,” the force said.

The Burnaby stop-not-collision incident happened as Metro Vancouver saw its first snowfall of the season, which caused chaos on roads around the region. There was a pileup crash in Richmond involving 25 or more vehicles, there were spun-out cars and buses on many icy roads, and transit users waited hopelessly for buses that seemed never to come.
