Foodies in and around Vancouver may remember the hype when Marugame Udon — a.k.a. “Japan’s favourite handmade udon house” — first shared that it would be coming to Canada, with its first location slated for Vancouver.

Opening day saw long lines, and many more lines in the days after, of hungry Vancouverites wanting to get their hands on the beloved (and affordable) bowls of udon that Marugame has become so well known for.

Now, the brand is poised to expand with three new locations across Canada — one of which is right here in Metro Vancouver.

Signs for the udon chain have popped up at CF Richmond Centre’s new outdoor retail development called “Park Plaza,” a brand-new high-density, mixed-use residential and commercial district currently taking shape on the property.

Marugame is known for its theatre-like atmosphere, and noodles with a signature “Marugame texture” — aka thick, chewy, and slightly firmer than you might find other udon noodles. They are also hand-cut and boiled on the spot.

This concept hails from Japan, where it was first founded in the year 2000.

Now with more than 1,000 locations worldwide in eight countries, this spot has amassed a cult following of folks who love its deep-fried crispy tempura and freshly handmade udon noodles.

In addition to Richmond, Marugame is also preparing to open other locations throughout Canada, including outposts in Calgary and Toronto.

As for the Richmond location, an opening date has yet to be announced. Be sure to check back here for more information soon.
