A popular Korean waffle and pancake cart is returning to Metro Vancouver

It’s no secret that Burnaby’s Korea Town Centre is a hub for some of the best food in Metro Vancouver. Whether you’re looking to stock up on some grocery staples from Hannam, grabbing a taiyaki ice cream from Little Pisces, or stopping for a study session at Standing Egg Coffee, there are plenty of great treats to enjoy. Now, a popular purveyor of Korean waffles and pancakes is making its return for the season.
Kim’s Korean Waffles and Pancakes announced that it will reopen on Oct. 1.

The stall, located underneath Arisu Authentic Korean BBQ, is best known for its two different snacks: waffles (bungeoppang) and pancakes (hotteok).
The waffles are Korean-style, made in the shape of a fish (not to be confused with the similarly shaped Japanese taiyaki) and filled with your choice of red bean, custard, or savoury mixed vegetables.
“A common winter street scene in Korea is that of food carts selling bungeoppang on street corners,” wrote Kim’s Waffles on its website. “For many Koreans, the sight of freshly baked bungeoppang and its sweet aroma wafting through the crisp winter air is a signal that winter has truly arrived.”
The pancakes, on the other hand, are served either sweet (with brown sugar and cinnamon) or savoury (with a vegetable medley).
“Hotteok is probably the most friendly winter snack favoured by all Koreans alike,” wrote Kim’s Waffles. “Be careful when you take that first bite; although the brown-sugar filling is delicious, it is often very hot. Like many of the other street foods in Korea, hotteok is a steal at one of the top favoured street snacks.”

Over the many years the business has been in operation, it has changed names a few times – from Kim’s Food to Five Loves Two Fish International to Korean Pancakes – but it’s always been in the same location.
Kim’s Korean Waffles and Pancakes opens on Oct. 1 and is only open during the fall, winter, and early spring months. These waffles and pancakes are made right in front of customers’ eyes, making for the perfect warm winter treat.
