One of Canada's top restaurant is hosting a canteen-style brunch pop-up in Vancouver

Following its inclusion in the top restaurants in Canada by Canada’s 100 Best, Kavita is hosting a special brunch pop-up in collaboration with Alai Coffee.

Called Kanteen Sundays, this four-part pop-up brunch series is born from a love of old Mumbai, drawing inspiration from Irani cafĂ©s, street fruit vendors, Bombay soda culture, and what Alai shared were the “kind of mornings that make you stay longer than you planned.”

As part of this special brunch pop-up, Alai Coffee has created a special Indian coffee menu alongside canteen-style light brunch offerings courtesy of Kavita.

You may recognize the name Alai if you frequented Vancouver coffee shops like Their There or Union Market over the past couple of months (or have stopped by Sula Cafe, which serves a selection of specialty Indian coffees courtesy of Alai alongside chai).

“India is one of the world’s largest coffee producers, yet its beans are often left off shelves in North America. As South Asians in Canada, we missed the deep, monsoon-grown coffee of home — so we built something to bring it here,” wrote Alai on its website. “Alai is a movement to make Indian coffee seen, named, and shared.”

When it comes to the coffee offerings at Kanteen Sundays, expect creations like a Salted Butter Cream Cold Brew that is inspired by the iconic bun maska of Mumbai’s Irani cafes.

There will also be a Raspberry Espresso Tonic that pays homage to Pallonji’s century-old raspberry soda and South Indian Filter Coffee.

As for the brunch offerings, expect bites like Bun Maska and Masala Eggs on Toast courtesy of Kavita’s chef and owner, Tushar Tondvalkar.

If you’re unfamiliar with Kavita, the restaurant opened its doors late last year and has quickly become one of the top destinations for modern Indian cuisine in Vancouver. Here, Tondvalkar offers what he calls an “amma-kase” menu — a take on the Japanese omakase, with “amma” meaning mother in many South Asian languages, which is an homage to Tondvalkar’s mother, for whom the restaurant is named. Kavita’s offerings are influenced both by local B.C. produce and the Indian festival calendar.

Kanteen Sundays takes place May 24, 31, June 14, and 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kavita with live DJs on site. Will you be checking it out? Let us know in the comments.
