According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the Highway 99 southbound closure will allow ministry engineers to assess the damage after.
Now, drivers who are travelling south from the George Massey Tunnel will be detoured at Highway 17A, but the Ministry says that drivers can expect significant congestion, delays, and are advised to avoid the area if possible.
If you’re heading out of Richmond into Delta and Surrey, try to use the Alex Fraser Bridge via Highway 91.
The incident occurred between Exit 28 and Exit 26 in Delta. The Highway 17A overpass westbound is also closed. Traffic cameras show a vehicle underneath an overpass.
This incident is just the latest overpass collision in the Lower Mainland. In February, a driver in Richmond dramatically collided with an overpass. In May, part of Highway 1 was closed in Abbotsford after a firey truck/overpass collision.
