Gina’s, Vancouver’s queer restaurant and bar serving up a menu of mostly plant-based options, has made the unfortunate announcement that our days to visit are numbered as the space is for sale.

Owner Valeria Velazquez took to Instagram to share an update with the many loyal fans of the restaurant.

“I’ve been sitting with how to write this because it’s been hard for me to find the right words,” Velazquez wrote. “Gina’s has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my life and one I’ll forever be grateful for. That said, I want to share with you that Gina’s is now for sale.”

Located at 227 East Pender St., Vancouver, Gina’s is known for its selection of mainly plant-based Mexican dishes and cocktails. Menu items include Chips Mexicana (choice of plain chips, Tostitos, or Takis with lime juice, Valentina sauce, Maggi sauce, and Worcestershire sauce), Vegan Tinga Tacos (soft corn tortillas with carrots and onions stewed in a chipotle and tomato sauce), and Aguachile (mushrooms, cucumber, and onion cured in a sauce made with lime juice, serrano pepper, and cilantro).

Velazquez added that there are many reasons behind this decision, and that it’s not just a financial one.

“From my immigration process, to burnout, to this city’s red tape, capacity limits, event restrictions, and the expectations and pressures that come with holding a space like this, it’s been hard to sustain the dream we had for this place,” she said.

Despite these challenges, Velazquez said that this has been one of the most meaningful things she’s ever done.

“Gina’s has been a dream come true, a space built on love, queerness, culture, food, creativity, and connection; a place where belonging was always possible,” Velazquez said. “Every laugh, every community night, every conversation, every karaoke night, and every quiet moment in the space… I’ll carry all of it with me forever.”

Velazquez added that its last full week of service will be ending on Sunday, Nov. 16, after which it will be open on weekends only with a smaller, changing daily menu and reduced hours until the sale is finalized.

“I hope Gina’s is a reminder as to why queer spaces and community matter,” she wrote. “By existing, by loving who we love, and by showing up for each other, we resist.”

“But queer spaces aren’t just about walls or locations; they go beyond that. Even if physical spaces close, our queerness and our community persist. Showing up for one another, nurturing connection and care, is not only how we survive, but it’s how we truly live.”

Velazquez also shared that this decision has been tough on her and the team, and as the process continues, they may not have the capacity to talk about it in person, especially during service. The best way to show love and support right now is to continue showing up and enjoying the space.

Many took to the comments sharing how important this space has been for them, and how much they will miss Gina’s.

“You built a beautiful space, and it breaks my heart to see yet another incredible queer gathering place close its doors. I’m grateful for everything,” said one user.

So much love to you Val and everyone else at Gina’s. Thank you for creating such an incredible and welcoming space,” said another.

“Thank you for creating such an amazing space. i came with a friend to watch the lesbian bar documentary and I’ve never felt so safe and seen in a bar. eternally grateful,” added a third.
