"Profound sense of sadness": Local restaurant gutted to announce its closure

We’re less than three months into the year, and the number of local restaurant closures in and around Vancouver keeps climbing higher and higher.
Stories of struggle within the hospitality business are not new to us, but seeing them pile up doesn’t get easier. This is, sadly, the case with Abbotsford’s El Compañero.
The Mexican Cantina operated at 33486 South Fraser Way in Abbotsford for four years. Unfortunately, the restaurant shared the sad news that it was closed at the end of February.
In an emotional message on Instagram, the El Compañero team said the current economic climate had left them with no choice but to shutter.
The restaurant said it was with a “heavy heart” and a “profound sense of sadness” that they shared this news. Known for serving up Mexican eats and sips and offering a great atmosphere, the business thanked both staff and customers for their support over the years.

On top of sharing word of their closure, El Compañero sounded the alarm about the need to champion local eateries right now.
As we say goodbye, we hope that you will continue to support local businesses. There are few small restaurants left in our community, and they need your support now more than ever. We are not alone in facing challenges; many are navigating these tough times.
From construction to redevelopment to skyrocketing rent increases, local businesses are up against a lot these days, and we’re sad to see another one go.
