Much-loved Vietnamese restaurant returns to Vancouver with new concept
Vancouver was heartbroken once word that Chau Veggie announced that it would be closing up shop at the end of 2024. However, the much-loved eatery is making a comeback with a new concept that has officially opened its doors.
Dubbed Chau Cafe, the new restaurant calls itself a “wellness eatery” serving “family-inspired Vietnamese food with a commitment to sustainability, emphasizing fresh vegetables and non-medicated meats.”
Regarding food, customers can expect to find some Chau Veggie favourites like its Golden Temple Soup. However, fans of Chau Veggie’s plant-based eats may be surprised to find meat dishes on the menu of Chau Cafe, such as the Mai Mai Plate served with lemongrass chicken.
“We aspire to create a space of holistic wellness to enhance well-being, nourish body and mind, and provide a sense of peace,” said the restaurant. “Food is more than just ingredients. It’s also about intentional eating. We are mindful of the dishes that we have crafted and pay close attention to how it makes our guests feel.”
On its website, owner Maria Huynh writes, “For most, the story of Chau is what lies on the plate in front of you. My story, however, began when my mother discovered her passion for food when she was 13 years old, working at a soup stall on the streets of Saigon.”

The ability to share a small piece of our belief with everyone at Chau has become a reality rather than an ambition. Currently, Chau Veggie Express’ location at Granville Island continues to operate as it, but its Victoria Drive location has officially made the transition to the new concept.
