Young child seriously injured after crash involving suspected drunk driver: DPD

A young child suffered serious injuries last week after a car crash involving a suspected drunk driver.

According to the Delta Police Department (DPD), the accident took place on January 14, just before 10 pm, in the 10100 blocks of River Road.

Police say that two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision. One car included a family of three travelling westbound; the other had a sole occupant travelling eastbound.

The sole occupant of the second vehicle was arrested by the police for suspected impaired driving. Officers say that the lone driver received minor injuries. The young child received serious injuries; the two other family members, fortunately, “received injuries that are believed to be minor in nature.”

“This needs to stop,” says Inspector Ciaran Feenan, Head of the Delta Police Patrol Section in a statement. “It’s absolutely unacceptable that a young child has received significant injuries.”

“People who make the choice to drive impaired are being incredibly selfish,” adds Feenan. “This incident has renewed our officers’ determination to make sure we take as many impaired drivers off the road as we can.”

Insp. Feenan notes that there were a number of people at the incident who attempted to help those involved, and thanks everyone who called for assistance and tried to help.

Delta police say that the investigation continues with the intention of pursuing criminal impaired driving charges.

The child involved in the crash was released from the hospital on the weekend and is now recovering at home.
