BC plans to vaccinate all priority health workers by end of January

BC hopes to have all key health care workers plus all residents of long-term care homes vaccinated by the end of January.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said that the goal comes with the caveat that the province doesn’t have a guarantee of how many doses of the Pfizer vaccine it will receive every week of January.

Right now, it only has solid numbers for doses coming in the first week of 2021.

Key frontline health care workers are the first in line, followed by residents of long-term care homes, and then other priority populations.

Henry confirmed that all five health authorities have now received vaccine shipments and are getting ready to distribute them from deep-freeze facilities.

At her news conference Monday, Henry also said 3,644 health care workers in BC have been immunized so far.

She added the emergence of a faster-spreading COVID-19 variant in the UK makes her want to immunize people as quickly as possible to prevent further illness and death.
