Islanders fan sitting next to penalty box hurls insults at Leafs' Tavares (VIDEO)

New York Islanders fans still aren’t over losing John Tavares.

The former Islanders captain found that out loud and clear when he returned to Long Island for the first time as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs on February 28. Isles fans were about as ruthless as you’ll ever at an NHL game.

That night, everything went in New York’s favour, as the Islanders walked all over the Leafs for a 6-1 win.

The second return trip to the place he called home for nine years went a whole lot better for Tavares though.

Not only did the Leafs beat the Islanders 2-1 on Monday, thereby clinching a playoff spot, Tavares scored the game-winning goal. The goal was Tavares’ 46th of the season – extending his career-best mark. It was also his 87th point, which set a new career-high.

Just 16 seconds after scoring the goal, Tavares picked up a slashing penalty, giving one bitter Islanders fan wearing a doctored Tavares jersey in the front row a chance to give ‘Johnny Toronto’ a piece of his mind.

“Hey John, you’re a traitor, a liar, a snake, a fake,” yelled the angry fan with a thick New York accent.

“You should have told us! We would have got picks for you you phoney fake. You suck, you’ll always suck, Tavares! You’ll always be a loser!! Always!!!”

Oh please, please, please let these teams meet in the Eastern Conference Final.
