Man struck and killed by snow plow after leaving stuck vehicle on Highway 1

A man who was walking alongside a road in Abbotsford was fatally struck by a vehicle equipped with a snow plow Thursday morning, police confirm.

According to the Abbotsford Police Department, the 31-year-old had been driving along Highway 1 but gotten stuck after his vehicle veered off the roadway. 

The pedestrian was walking along the side of North Parallel towards a gas station when he was tragically hit, police told Daily Hive.

The incident occurred around 6:15 am near North Parallel and Fooks roads.

“The truck is privately owned and operated and has no connection to the city whatsoever,” police added.

Police said when officers arrived at the scene, the pedestrian was suffering from serious and life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.

In an update Thursday afternoon, the police department confirmed, “We have unfortunately learned that the victim has passed away in hospital.”

“We offer condolences to all those impacted by this incident as this is a very tragic situation all around,” a statement from Abbotsford police read. 

Police added the driver of the involved truck remained at the scene and is cooperating.

“Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash, with inclement weather and snow likely being contributing factors,” according to the police department.
