Donald Trump permanently suspended from Twitter

Donald Trump has officially had his Twitter account permanently suspended.

After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” stated Twitter on Friday afternoon.

On Wednesday, a violent group of pro-Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol in Washington, DC, as lawmakers counted votes to affirm President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

Trump reportedly encouraged supporters to go to Washington prior to the count.

Following several tweets where Trump appeared to sympathize with his supporters, Twitter locked his account for 12 hours.

“In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action,” noted Twitter.

“Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open. However, we made it clear going back years that these accounts are not above our rules and cannot use Twitter to incite violence. We will continue to be transparent around our policies and their enforcement.”

Trump has also been banned from posting on Facebook and Instagram. On Thursday Mark Zuckerberg posted a statement that Trump’s accounts would be blocked “indefinitely” and at least for the remainder of his presidential term.
