The first week of March in Montreal is starting off under a freezing rain warning.

Environment Canada issued the alert in the early hours of Monday morning, calling for 2 to 5Ā millimetres of freezing precipitation around Montreal.

Up to tenĀ millimetres is expected between Lachute andĀ LanaudiĆØre beginning this afternoon through until this evening.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become icy and slippery,” states the weather agency. “There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.”

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.

The alert is in effect for both Montreal and Laval.
